Hi everyone,

I currently live in Madison WI and am thinking of moving to Austin Texas. Main reasons:

Push factors:

1. Don't get to see my wife in Madison WI for about 2 years, been here about 2 years because she is only able to get shift work. She has an associate's degree.

2. The bitter cold. It is near impossible to walk with the freezing rain and it is simply to cold.

3. Job opportunities. I hold a MBA, have more than 5 years of corporate finance experience. However I find it hard to get the same type of job here.

4. Transport system here is not good. It takes about 1.5 hours to go anywhere by bus any only 15 minutes by car. At least for the places I want to go.

I would like to know the following:

1. Is it hard for my wife to get a 8 - 5 job in Austin Texas?

2. Job opportunities for me.

3. Transport system.

4. Crime rate, specifically violent crime.

5. Tornadoes. When was the last time Austin got hit by it?

6. Living cost

Thanks!

Why Austin? Have you been here before? Do you have a job? Have you seen our traffic? Heard about our traffic? Visit, find a job then decide if we're a good fit.

I actually heard recently that an MBA doesn't get you as far as you would think in Austin.

Thank you for the feedback. I felt Austin had a low cost and it had high salary. Maybe I'm wrong?

I am betting you are right about being wrong. Read through some of the salary threads in this forum, then some about the high rents and even higher property taxes.

I hope things work out for you and your wife; but I doubt moving to Austin will help with anything except getting out of the mega-cold winters.

Can't speak to the accuracy of this site; but it's a start:

I had seen that link and went to it. Does not seem that Austin is particularly based on that website.

not hard to get an 8-5 job
tornadoes not something to worry about. A few surrounding areas have been bit, but not Austin (been here over 20 years and don't recall one)
violent crime low. very safe
living cost varies a ton depending on what areas you want to live in

Thank you clarksvillemom. Would I get a safe neighborhood if my rental budget is $800 - $1,000? Are there jobs for financial analyst/reporting?

800-1000 is tough. Maybe evenwuestionable. That's my budget and my apartment complex was on the news for robberies a few weeks ago.

There are apartments in your price range in Cedar Park. Safe with easy access to 183 and toll 45. Traffic will suck big time at rush hour, though. Buses sit in the same traffic during peak drive times. I can't comment on your work needs.
