Austin hasn't proved that they are serious about solving traffic. Austin needs to show a huge gesture that proves they mean business, and fast. Turning I-35 into a tollroad or HOV only would be a start. A bold idea to solve traffic might push us into lead contention for HQ2

Unlike every other contender, that has "solved" traffic?

Traffic is never solved. If you ever do, induced demand will make it worse.

Austin has bad traffic. So does every large city (and a large city was a requirement).

Some cities are better about addressing it than others. Austin consistently ranks as having some of the worst traffic in the country.

Not inducing demand, REDUCING demand, like what tolls and HOV lanes would do. I am not a proponent of paving. Anything that keeps people from driving alone in a car is progress. The cheaper the better. Create RULES for free, not subways for billions.

Addressing traffic by modifying rules will buy us time to fix the infrastructure.

"If you don't build it, they won't come".

Yup, that's how we got where we are now...

Not what I was suggesting.

They'll come. They just can't all drive alone in a car for free.

Any kind of rule that will temporarily get people out of their cars will buy us some time to improve capacity:

HOV lanes
Tolls
Moratorium on parking structures.
Incentive walkable residential space downtown.

Amazon would mostly build downtown or just south of the lake. The closest hwy would be I-35, and should be a priority. East Riverside would be best, as the West side of I-35, 360 and Mopac all have an overloaded infrastructure.

As are most/all of the other cities mentioned as possibilities for Amazon.

Dallas : worse than Austin
Atlanta : worse than Austin
Chicago: worse than Austin
DC : worse than Austin

I'm not quite going so far as to say its a non-issue, but if it's the only standard Amazon uses for their decision (which almost certainly it won't be) it'll eliminate a whole lot of other cities first.

Amazon didn't list bicycle/walkability-friendly in their requirements?

". For each proposed site in your region, identify all transit options, including bike
lanes and pedestrian access to the site(s)."

Why is it important for Amazon to locate in Austin?
Who is it important to for Amazon to locate in Austin?
Surely more "incentives" that unfairly favor some companies over others is not contemplated.

As far as "downtown" - can't think of a worse location for any company.
