Austin - Then and Now
For anyone interested in Austin history, or whoever's looking for an Austin-related gift...I just picked up the above photography book at Costco for twelve bucks! it's a really neat coffee table book that shows historic places in Austin way back when, and then now. It gives a short history on each locale and the photos are great. Got some great ideas of places to go visit that I hadn't heard of before, too.
Thought I'd share the wealth! I think there was a "Texas, Then and Now" version as well.

Thanks for the tip, gigi! I would love to see that book. I've still never been inside a Costco, do you have to go through a membership process before you can buy anything there? And where IS it? (Me not so smart...)

There is also one on Dallas. I've got that one. You can find it probably at any bookstore. I've seen them at Barnes & Noble. I have a huge one on Colorado that is leather bound. I wish the Dallas and Texas related ones were as nice. They do make great coffee table books. I swear I've had mine for over 5 years sitting on one of the same two tables and someone in my family is ALWAYS looking at them when they are all here.

Someone had to say this, so I might as well: Maybe when your family is all together, they'll look at ANYTHING that allows them an excuse to escape from being together....
Just teasing.

deeptrance...I know there is a Costco near Mopac and William Cannon?? I think? The one near us is on the 183 just north of the 360 interchange. I"m sure there are others around as well.
There really isn't a membership process, they just take an annual fee from you of $35 or so. I think you are supposed to own your own business, too...but not sure if that rule has changed. Anyway, we get our $35 back in spades just on the wine, meat and diaper wipes we buy there. How pathetic is my life?

How much wine do your toddlers drink per day? From what I've heard, they shouldn't have more than about 8 drinks per day until they're at least 4 years old!

Forget milk, it's wine in their bottles! They're on the French diet.

DT, the Costco is on William Cannon and Mopac, and it's $50/year unless you want the Gold membership, which is $100. I can't remember the exact difference, only that with the Gold membership (or premium or whatever it's called) you get cash back at the end of the year. There's also a business membership.
You can browse the store before getting a membership. Just tell the person at the door that you want to look around because you're considering joining.
I like Costco because they have some good-quality stuff. And I got my tires there, so now when I need a tire rotation, I can get some shopping done instead of waiting in an incredibly dull tire store.

Good grief, I live about 1.5 miles from there and cannot even picture how something big like a Costco could exist in that location....
Austin changes faster than I can change my own diapers.... errr, I meant CLOTHES!
I have many liberal friends who praise Costco for their good treatment of employees and other PC policies. In fact, the guy who lives upstairs from me is a Shambala Buddhist who works at Costco and loves his job. I hate his job because he gets up at about 3:15 IN THE MORNING and it takes him a loud hour to get ready to go to work. I presume he starts his shift around 4:30 AM, UGH!!!!!! It's not his fault, these are just cheap apartments.

Sounds like you've been partaking in some wine as well!
