Some favorites -

Second on Dot's
Hoover's on the eastside
Catfish Parlor - all the hush puppies you can eat, as Texas as it gets.
Scholz's (go hear the Wurst band on thursday nights, ' Admission is free, but "priviledge of ejection is reserved")
Gospel Brunch at Stubb's/Threadgills on Sunday.
Quality Seafood on Lamar - great fish market with informal dining.
For the brave, the hot chili at Texas Chili Parlor (not a great meal place, but stop in for a couple of beers and some great chili)
Hudson's on the Bend for a little Kangaroo Tail.
Moonshine downtown
Driskill downtown

Worth a drive: Backstage Steak House in Spicewood.

Katz's
New york style deli, but feels very Austin to me (especially at 2am).

Also love Magnolia, Kerby Lane, and Hyde Park all of those feel a lot more typical Austin.
Oh! I almost forgot Spiderhouse Cafe. Used to love that place...

If you want to go high end, try Wink (Austin with a San Francisco flair - it's a very good restaurant using a lot of organic ingredients tucked in an ancient strip mall on lamar next to a dry cleaners) or its sister restaurant, Zoot, whose location is actually a really cute old bungalow house.

Be prepared to throw down some change, though.

Freddies place is where I take my visitors to get a taste of austin. Very casual,
hip 78704 ish! Dog friendly, they have a website. Likely not fancy enough for inlaws but fun none the less.

Eastside Cafe
Z Tejas
Katz's
Trudy's (near campus, although its Tex Mex)
Threadgills
Waterloo
The Tavern at Lamar (it's air conditioned!)
Also if there are kids, you might like the HEB Central Market at 38th & Lamar. The food is good and there is a large patio and a nice park-like, shaded playscape for kids.
Another kid-friendly option is Nutty Brown off of 290 at Nutty Brown.

I like Hyde Park Grille (in Hyde Park). Very austintatious, very inexpensive, very nice & the best fried egg sandwich in town (damn good filet's & kobe burgers too).

I don't see the big deal of that place. I cared less for it and even the lady spilled some wine on my shirt and said sorry and act like it would come out. Had to ask for the manager and I got a bunch of "we're sorry about this" and my food was free. After eating it, it should be for free
