Funny, the map disagrees completely. If I'm driving north on 95, the conversion to 395 is seamless. And 95 starts again north of the city. East is 495.

I lived in the DC area, you're not going to win this. You can see clearly on this map that I-95 goes east and is conjunct with I-495

Educate yourself. Maybe you should have paid closer attention when you lived there. Feel free to apologize when you finish reading:

The 14th Street Bridge complex has carried the US-1 designation since the U.S. Highway System was established in the 1920s, and then later it carried I-95 also, and then I-395 replaced the I-95 designation in 1977 when the construction of I-95 north of New York Avenue in D.C. was cancelled (the I-95 designation was moved to the eastern half of the I-495 Beltway in 1977, and I-395 replaced the I-95 designation on Shirley Highway from I-495 to the 14th Street Bridge, on the 14th Street Bridge itself, on the Southwest Freeway in D.C. and on the Center Leg Freeway in D.C.).

What ya talkin' bout Willis?

"the I-95 designation was moved to the eastern half of the I-495 Beltway in 1977"

I was in DC in the mid 90's. Since then it's been on the Beltway.

Exactly my point. Where was 95 built? Right into downtown DC. Only later was it re-badged and "moved". And moving it only meant signs. Not the road itself. Which, still becomes 395 and heads right for the center of the city.

What's your point? Do you believe that all that is needed is to get SH130 "re-badged" as I-35 and that will fix Austin's traffic issues?

My point is, there are any number of interstates that run right through the heart of cities. One of the initial purposes of the interstate system was for military movements. In fact, interstates bypassing cities is the exception rather than the rule. Your posts #9 and #12 stated otherwise. I simply corrected your initial mistake. Thus began a long stretch of countering posts.

As to the original post, I think I-35 is always going to be a huge problem. I'd like to see 18 wheeler traffic pushed to 130. Austin's geography doesn't really lead itself to any other roads being built. I have no data, but a potential continuation of I-14 to connect with I-10 might help a little bit.

How do you "push" 18 wheeler traffic to 130?

Lift tolls for 18 wheelers on 130?
- who is going to pay for 130, when most of the traffic is 18 wheelers paying nothing?

Toll 18 wheelers on I-35?

-Lawsuit.

Doncha think think SWAPPING the two freeways would be the cleanest way of fixing this?

SH45 should be free so that "in town" traffic can be diverted onto Mopac both north, and south.

There are a myriad of ways to pay for 130. Truckers already pay a lot to drive on roads. But pushing truckers to 130 alleviates a lot of congestion and slow downs on I35 from truckers taking a while to get back up to speed.

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but for a time Georgia forced truckers to take 285 around Atlanta. It can be done. Don't allow truck traffic in Austin. It's a start.

Also, TxDOT could provide better signage to push through traffic to 130. It's not the best route for most Austinites, but 130 is a better path if you are passing through.
