TRUE or FALSE?????
Hello Texans,
This thread is about San Antonio and Austin and I am looking for the feedback of those who have spent considerable time in both places and/or continue to spend considerable time in both places.
I basically have two questions.
Question One: I have read on this forum in different threads that a very noticable difference between Austin and San Antonio is that Austin is more of the fast paced and liberal city, while as San Antonio is somehwat slower, more laid back and conservative. Thus, if one is looking for a fast paced, liberal atmosphere then Austin is the place for he and his family. However, if one is looking for a place that is conservative and more laid back, then San Antonio would be his best bet. Is this True or False?
Second Question:If the above scenario is true, can a conservative husband and wife and their children still make it in Austin while living the strict lifestyle they do?
A little bit about us;
My wife and I are 29 and 33 respectively. On one hand, we are considered to be very conservative, but on the other hand we also insist on other people excercising their GOD given rights to live their lives as they see fit. Yet, we would prefer to be in as conservative an atmosphere as possible. We have three boys ages 9, 5 and 1. We wish to raise them to observe our morals and values while at the same time teaching them not judge or take on ill views of others who do not see things as we do.
I am looking for a place that is pretty much laid back, slower paced and pretty conservative. A place that we can raise our family in peace and be able to stay out of everyone elses way.
We are looking at many different places. We have been going through a process of elimination type of road.
Thanx in advance for all feedback,
Vegetta.

Re:
I can tell you that San Antonio is actually alot more fast paced than Austin, or at least it feels that way. Austin is very diverse, liberal, and the people are laid back and tolerant.San Antonio is a very busy metropolis and definetly more conservative than Austin.
I definetly recommend that you visit both cities before actually moving, so that you can get an idea which city you guys like better.
I think you would do fine in either city, conservative or not.
They are both nice places it to live, just very different from each other.

I grew up in San Antonio and got out of there as quick as I could. This was in 93 but back then there really was not a great deal going on in SA and the downtown was in need of repair. However in 06 SA is on the rise and there is a great deal going on in the city. As far as being fast paced I simply don't see it in either of these cities, unless you are talking about real estate that is because we have so many outside investors and transplants. You should be fine in either city you choose, I prefer Austin but I am warming up to SA. However as far as housing is concerned you will get more bang for your buck in SA.

Thank you for the reply blackthorne. What you said is 100% right on. This is really the ONLY way I could get a real feel of either place and be able to judge for myself. Thanx again.

Vegetta.

I'm biased against San Antonio so I'm not going to participate, but I recommend you send a PM to Steel Man to direct his attention to your thread. He's a moderator who knows a lot about San Antonio. There are others who know both places well but I can't recall who off the top of my wobbly head.

Austin and San Antonio
There are worlds of difference between these two cities! Austin is much more liberal, and the population age difference is quite constrasting too. This of course could be the hand and hand reason. I would say go to Austin if your looking for more of a mixed cultural feel. If you want laid back San Antonio is your best bet, plus as earlier mentioned it is cheaper. You sound pretty young both you and your wife, so honestly I think that you would like Austin better, not to mention the jobs oppurtunitites are more plentiful. Austin is the college city, San Antonio however maby better suited for a family. Keep in mind however that while San Antonio is being built upon heavily, the streets and traffic in the interim are horri6ble. In addition to that, there is a HUGE hispanic predominance here. Plus we do house many of the Katrina move out victims and that has added even more to a city whose violent crimes have been on the rise as of lately. Another thing you'll want to consider is the weather situation here in Central Texas. BOTH of these cities will be stifiling hot in the summer, and the seasonal allergies can be killer. Neither of these cities, in my opinion offers the culture or the oppurtunities of either Houston or Dallas, but even these cities lack the luster and sophistication of many other cities in the US. If you want to know more about other cities, I've lived in many, just hit me up either on here or coolcharisma21@yahoo.com and I can give you any tips or advice that I've gathered over my travels.
Much luck to you,
Devin

Prince I was interested in that too, I love San Antonio and I grew up part of my youth in Dallas FW, but i didnt know Austin very well. I was interested too how Conservative families would fair--esp an interracial family with a child and traditional family values but also professionals(lawyer, professor, nonprofit) and where would they fit in.
also are there places to get out to the countryside-fishing, hiking, biking etc
