Good Morning,

Recently I've been considering moving to Austin. I've been living in NYC for the last 16 years and I feel like its just time for a change.

I'm a single male, graduating from college this year with a degree in communication ba ( cross cultural & international communication ). I have almost a decade long experience working in the hospitality industry. I've worked at Marriott and Hilton hotels (Hampton Inn, Double Tree, Courtyard by Marriott and Marriott). Most of my experience is as a housekeeping manager but I also did front desk & night audit.

Would it be hard for me to find a job as a housekeeping supervisor or manager in Austin? I wouldn't mind having a job via an outsourcing hospitality staffing company at first. As long as I will have some sort of employment. I'm not moving anytime soon, probably at the end of this year or at the beginning of next.

I will most definitely be applying for jobs before moving out. I'm planning on visiting Austin during spring break or over Thanksgiving break just to have the feel of the city. What I am concerned about is the public transportation. I do not drive and I'm not looking forward to driving. I know that there's no trains like in NYC, only buses but that's fine as long as I can find a place to live near public transport. I will probably be looking at renting either a studio or 1 bedroom. There's also a possibility of buying a condo if I find something that I really like.

I will greatly appreciate any information or suggestions from you guys.
Thank you.

Austin public transit is not great, but you can arrange it so you have access to bus lines. For your profile I think the east side would be cool. East side is pretty inexpensive and you would be close to all the hotel jobs.

No idea on the jobs, but it is probably helpful if you are fluent in spanish.

You were rolling until the bolded part. Tying yourself to public transit is going to be rough, possible, but rough.

The hospitality job market is strong, but the pay to COL ratio isn't.

Have you been to Austin before? What's your reason for considering Austin? How about the hot weather? The service industry is probably going to be easy to get into, but let's talk about your reasons why Austin is a good choice before offering these up. If you want to live on your own on the Eastside you'll need to be able to pay at least $1400 a month for a place. If you're cool with a roommate situation probably between $800-$1200. $1200 if you want to be in a new build that is peak gentrification.

I grew up in NYC and also lived in Texas for 20+ years. There is no comparison when it comes to public transportation.
You will need to get yourself a car.

Growing up in NYC with its pubic transit makes almost every other city pale in comparison.

You're looking at the wrong city if you want to get around without a car.

The pay in the hospitality is low compared to NYC and not as advanced.

If you want a tourism centered city that you can use public transit, look to New Orleans. Nowhere that you can't either walk, drive, or take a streetcar to. Tourism jobs don't pay a lot but the city is much cheaper and you can live a pretty good life there on a tourism salary.
