Most desirable areas in Austin where you can buy a 3 bedroom house with a garage and a decent yard for $350k or less. Or how about this...least desirable areas to live in Austin, if that's even possible?

Desirable is subjective. To me desirable is Leander.. cedar park.. parts of Georgetown... maybe by the lake.

But to someone else these areas may be the opposite of desirable. If your trying to be IN Austin just to be in city limits you’ll have to be a lot more specific on what your looking for in an area besides house because Austin is one of the largest cities based on land mass. Given that beyond the urban core (and I mean a handful of streets) most of austin IS virtually a giant suburb in itself.

I would guess that the next part of Austin to gentrify, and where you can find what you are looking for, and often with much bigger lots than you can find in the suburbs would be parts of North Central Austin. The schools are not considered desirable and Rundberg and 35 is the highest crime area in Austin, though far from dangerous by big city standards. There are bargains to be had in zip codes 78753, 78727, 78728, the the house flippers are already moving in...

Just focus on finding homes in the $350K price range! That is the biggest issue. They are there but often far from Austin proper -- unless you are going into the Rundberg area.

My brother is looking for a house, Buda/Kyle look to be the best fit for him -- he wants a newer house, close to me in central Austin and a short hop to the airport. Your mileage may vary.

78758 is NOT a terrible zip code. I lived in it for 8 years, and believe me, the gentrifying flippers are already all over that zip code. The actual intersection of Rundberg and Lamar isn't great, but unless you're going to literally set up a tent right there and live on it, the surrounding neighborhoods are fine. Parts of them are pretty nice.

I'd happily live in Gracy Woods across from Walnut Creek Park again, or the nicer streets in Quail Creek. If you don't care about schools or are going to send your kids to private school, this is a decent place to look for an affordable house.

There are still non-Rundberg areas in Austin proper that are $350k or less. Wells Branch is a good area. You're not going to have a large lot or particularly large house. It will probably be older too.

78753 north of Rundberg is nice. The area near Graham Elementary is 78753. I agree with 78758. '57 can even be good in some spots. 78728, '27 and '29 may also fit but I haven't been on realtor.com to look at those areas for a while. OP needs to provide a bit more info about what other things they want to by nearby, if commute is an issues, if schools are an issue, etc. Because as a young single person I wouldn't have a problem moving to 78758 or even north 78753, but with kids that would be another story. Even with the schools improving there still aren't great.

Actually, they are building new (smaller) houses in Wells Branch area that would probably fit the bill, and they go to a decent RRISD school track, I think. I'd look for any houses in Wells Branch that are tracked to the new Joe Lee Johnson STEAM elementary school if I had kids and needed to stay in that price range.

78729 (where I currently live) has decent schools, but $350k and under houses in this zip will be hotly contested.

78749 between Mopac and Brodie, just south of William Cannon but north of Slaugher. 3/2 in an established neighborhood with decent yards - under $350K.
