I was raised in a house were there was absolutely no mention of race. I grew up really not noticing the differences. I can say honestly I have nothing against ANYONE unless I'm given a reason, But I see racism AGAINST white people all over the place.
Why is it that African American comedians can spend a full hour set spewing negative things about white people and no one complains, Put that situation in reverse and it becomes "racist" and all sorts of activists come out "offended" and "outraged".
I think its a pretty dumb topic in general. The more you complain about racism the more racism is breed. All it does is build resentment.

Son, outside of the American Indian, they has been no people treated more poorly for as long as African Americans in our country. So, whatever racism 'AGAINST white people' you think you see, I can assure you carries not a candle to what black folks in this country have gone through. I really think you should watch 'Rudy' and straighten up.

I'm not turning it off the issue, I'm pointing out that you are stereotyping in that one sentence. The accusation of stereotyping that you made is part of the issue - you introduced it, remember? That you wrote a sentence that is clearly stereotyping would seem to me to be something that might make you think. It certainly does me, when something like that happens to me (and it has over the past few decades a few times.)

Hoooweeeee! I am with you Sam. I had no idea that we had so many experts here on what it is like to be discriminated against. Heck! I didn't even know it but I think maybe even I have been reversely discriminated against too! Maybe we can get together, pop us up a bowl of corn, watch 'Rudy' and get our heads on straight and our attitudes adjusted!

Well, to me you are all over the place. I thought this thread was about racism in Austin and not me or you, but whatever. You want to be right you win! LOL!

MYLife2shrt, this is not about me being right. I've taken something away from this discussion to think about. Have you taken anything away from it that you didn't bring to it?

Isn't that, after all, the point of discussion?

I'd say that about sums it all up ProfessorSenator.
It's funny how hard it is for people around here to just acknowledge this simple fact. I take it you must have already seen 'Rudy'.

I have always found Austin to be much "whiter" and much more "hillbilly" than many places. Yes, part of the Austin scene is young/hip/cool. But part of the Austin scene is quite reactionary and redneck. It's central Texas, after all -- it's not the San Francisco Bay area, nor is it Boston. Texas is a southern state, and the vestiges of Jim Crow (east side vs. west side, for example) are still around.
Yes, south is the south. They have a bit to go. Even though some are in denial.

Even though some are in denial.

You know what? You need to take a good, long, look at the accusations you make against others, PARTICULARLY this one. Then go back and read that stereotyping sentence you wrote. Then go look in the mirror and tell yourself that everyone else is in denial.

But you have clearly answered my question about whether or not you're taking anything from this discussion other than than what you brought to it.

Yes, what you said continues to confirm how people live in denial of the truth. This is one of the reasons that there continues to be a racial divide.

It is just so wierd to me that some people paint this picture of themselves and lives and won't look at the truth! Are they afraid? I don't know, but I heard said once the the "truth will set you free" and for you to say that Austin and Texas in not mostly white (in the middle class and upper class neighborhoods) and they accept everyone race is ridiculous. That you think that you are as metro as New york city and San fran is also ridiculous, but all you keep talking about is "you", "I". The OP was not asking about you...he was talking about the the area as a whole and that is what I was talking about as well.
