I thought that sentence was striking. My grandparents on both sides of the family came here as steerage because they "wanted to" and were allowed entry. They all were able to prosper even though at first they didn't speak English. Thankfully we did not have a president at the time that demonized them or used them as pawns for a sick, political purpose.

I brought up the question because if something is happening in Taylor we should know about it. It is relevant to our area because it is in our area. Taylor is very close to Austin.

Texas should really consider changing their slogan.

Not everyone made it through Ellis Island if you've read any history of the place. If the immigrants didn't meet the health & physical standards they were shipped back across the pond, and lots of them were rejected. Talk about "separating families" - it was real and permanent then.

Also the criminals & extreme malcontents that were caught were likewise deported.

There wasn't any a-hole president when my ancestor stepped ashore in Philadelphia from Heidelberg, Germany in 1754. He didn't speak the lingo either. The old Meisterburger Burgermeister back home was probably glad to see him go too.

But again - there is no inherent right for any foreigner to come here. We do have immigration laws just like Mexico and every other nation has, and they should be respected & enforced. My family did so when we migrated down there. Then there are those frauds who abuse and game the system - after being coached how to do it. Plenty of them around.

The problem is the crappy way the current immigration laws are set up, and they should be modified or replaced. Facilitate the Green card rules along with "guest worker" applications - but make sure the recipients follow the requirements.
Unfortunately for everybody, neither political party has the nads to fix anything.

But this country cannot take everybody, as our own citizens are already short on government resources. Why should our poor citizens have to give up their entitlements to foreigners, especially illegals?
Look what they are doing to our school & healthcare systems, not to mention the tax payers. That isn't right.
