I do not like to respond to these questions because this topic is so subjective to the individual, but I will since I have a minute.
Just pick a place and eat a meal you are eager to devour. If you are disappointed, oh well. if not, great.

I remember one afternoon about 25 years ago, I drank 3 of those purple margaritas made with everclear at Baby A's. After I got back home about 4 in the afternoon, I sat down in the big easy chair and fell sound asleep and didnt wake up until early the next morning.

I'll say this about Baby A's, I never suffered a hangover after over indulging on their margaritas.

You have not experienced the real Austin until you have done just that at least once.

Avoid the chain places and eat as local as possible. As with everything food, there are a myriad of opinions. But buy tacos from a small stand or a taco truck. Torchy's is not really representative of real Mexican food. It's a bit foo-foo.

Gus' Fried chicken is good and close.

Lot's of good burgers downtown.

When I stay in downtown Austin, I sometimes go to The Roaring Fork for their Kettle of Green Chile Pork, with flour tortillas. Its in the building containing The Intercontinental Hotel, which is right across from The Driskill.

For me, it's simple and tasty. Also a good value.

I've walked by Hut's so many times, I can't believe I haven't tried it. Not being an Austin native (at least, not for a long time), I think the original Z Tejas is worthwhile. However, parking there can be tricky at peak times. Their location up by The Arboretum has some nice sunset views if you sit on their outside deck ... not sure, but summer may not be the best season for that.

I only went once, but we also enjoyed Mi Madre's on Manor Road.

I don't think they take reservations. We got there at 6...8 ppl. You order at the counter and they bring you food to you as it comes out. It's pretty fast.

Tables are mostly communal.
