University Tiering System????
I heard that Universities are rated by a tiering system to show their degree value in the job market. Has anyone heard of this? How do Texas Universities and Colleges in Austin and Houston rate compared to NJ and NY?

I've heard of the US News and World Report tiering system, don't know if that is what you are referring to. If so, UT Austin and Rice (Houston) are tier one. Not sure about any of the others, or NY/NJ schools. But I am sure there are tier one schools in NY and NJ.

US News and world report website -- just click on "rankings" and select "colleges", then search by name or state. It will give you a ranking #. For example, UT Austin:
USNews.com: America's Best Colleges 2008: University of TexasAustin: At a glance
Then you can look them up on this list.. basically, the top 50 are tier 1, the next 50 are tier 2, etc:
USNews.com: America's Best Colleges 2008: National Universities
NOTE: I don't think the US News criteria includes anything about degree value in the workplace. They rank by academics and other criteria.

It sounds like OP is asking about the Carnegie Classifications.
