we were denied a homestead exemption in 2018. We had our property in an LP which was not eligible so we switched it over to a trust around august of 2018. When we reapplied for the homestead exemption we were denied for 2018, they said it would be active in 2019.

What are the rules around this?

We have ours in a trust as well. We were told, by Hays County, that it wouldn't start until the beginning of a full year.

got it. I was wondering if maybe when you purchase a property they allow continuation of the exemption even though it is only a partial year for you as the buyer.

You have to own it as the trust on Jan 1 of the year you want to claim, so you'll have to submit for 2019. You have until April 30 to submit.
