I used to go there before it was Eastside Cafe. It was called Carla's, and they had the most amazing orange poppyseed pancakes, served with pecan butter. I never cared that much for Eastside Cafe. But the garden out back is pretty awesome.

I remember Carla's! And didn't eat at Eastside much after we moved, but it was definitely a tasty Austin institution of the old school. It will, like so many before it, be missed.

Owner retired, cashed in her assets. Good for her, she had a great run.

Good for her is right. But I did love that restaurant. I'm sad to see that it's going away.

I think it's great for the owner, but I wish someone could have bought the restaurant and kept it as it is.

Things change...I used to go there semi-regularly when it was 'new', but have to admit that I haven't been there in years (10? 15?). I have to say I never recall having anything less than an exceptional meal there .

I LOVED Carla's! Hadn't thought of that place in ages. Wow, that takes me back. And yes, those pancakes were to die for. I'm so glad I was around back in the day and got to experience all the (late,) great eateries of Austin-past.

I think I've eaten a ton of that Baked Brie.

We went very often during our first stint here (2003-2005) Usually on a Sunday early evening.

After we moved back in 2014, we went back once. The food was as good but I think our palates had moved on.

Loved the garden out back. I also remembering, back in 2004, that I always thought it was in a sketchy part of town.

Silly now.

It was a mainstay for UT staff and professors because it was close and predictable. I guess they have more options now though. As said, everything changes...especially in Austin.
