I am renting a condo from an independent owner in Austin. The plumber was replacing a toilet when raw sewage backed up into the unit. They had a sterilization team come to clean it up and rip out floorboards after the backup was stopped.

The sewage line is working now, but the landlord has not yet put a toilet in - there is just a hole in the ground. Today is Sunday and there has not been a working toilet since Thursday. Is she liable to cover my expenses for staying in a hotel during this time?

I have seen in Texas State Law that reasonable time to fix an issue is 7 days, except in certain circumstances involving health hazards such as raw sewage.

how many toilets do you have in the condo? Also, did the workers somehow plug the toilet hole so that methane gases don't come into the dwelling?

Currently zero toilets, otherwise prior to the incident there would be one. Yes, the workers have temporarily plugged the hole.

I don't know the law concerning this, but common sense would say if you have no toilet your landlord should pay for a hotel. Call your landlord today!! Let them know what is going on and you had to get a hotel because of the sewage mess and no toilet. I am a landlord and I would have immediately have told you to go to a hotel if this was the case. You want to keep your tenants safe.
