Default salary cut?

hi,

I am currently working in sw engineering in CA and considering a personal move to Austin. I am not a silicon valley millionar, so I'm just looking for a better quality of life in Austin for my little family. My employer is OK to let me go but wants to cut my salary by 5k$. I would make 115k$ in Austin.

Has anyone of you being moved from high cost states (CA) and had to accept a salary cut from your employer? is 115k$ a good salary for 9 years / exp in Austin? does it sound like a good move / decision? School system in CA is horrible so this is also an important point for my kid.

Any experience is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I think you'd do very well on $115K in Austin. The cost of living there is much lower than anywhere in CA.

I would pack your bags as quickly as possible and take that offer while it's on the table. Less than a 5% pay cut on that type of salary is great in my opinion. That's nothing. A lot of us California transplants took a 20% to 40% pay cut so we could come to Austin.

We just had a salary survey done for our IT staff actually. According to it, for a 10-year software engineer in Austin the average is $87K. $115K puts you in top 5% in town.

Mark,

when you say lot of California transplants took a 20 to 40% cut. Is this with the same employer?

No, but definitely within the same industry. Same job titles.

Looking at it the other way, if my company wanted to move me to CA from Austin, I'd want a 20-25% increase.

So I think a 5% pay cut won't hurt anything but your a little tiny bit of your pride

Are you saying I should be happy with a 5% cut and that I should have had at least -20%?

Well, by having me moving to TX, the company does substantial economy: employers pay less taxes in TX than in CA! so in this way, it's all good for them...

Must be nice...

I actually got a $1K raise when I came out here, but not with the same employer because I had just lost my job of 9 years. So I guess really I had a pay cut when my company shut our site down and I took the first job I found for less dough, so I guess it was about a 8% pay cut altogether which set the bar for what I could ask for here.

My income now is still 5 figures, but we live quite well here, and my wife doesn't work. We have a ~3,700 sq. ft. house near Lake Travis in one of the best master planned communities, with hills and greenery so I don't miss So. CA so much. We walk to two Exemplary schools and our kids have almost too many friends, and they have good parents. It is just a good "eco system" for families that want to do it right!

$115K is an excellent two income wage out here, but you could go crazy too. If you are bring about $400K-$500K in equity with you, you could pick any one of "cream of the crop" neighborhoods and have a reasonable mortgage, but don't forget to factor in taxes.
