Hmmm, are there any spots by the lakes that are also close to the "hub" of town? We're also looking to move but have never been and have no idea what the lay of the city is.

Yes. Through downtown, the Colorado river is known as Ladybird Lake (formerly Town Lake), and there are many places to get in with non-motorized watercraft. Just west of downtown, it becomes Lake Austin, where you can get in with motorized craft at several locations... off city park road, 360/2222... then further west it becomes Lake Travis, a little farther from town.
