The Oasis was the tackiest place with the most disgusting food I've eaten in Austin.
Their only selling feature is the view. Also, the staff was very nice when we were there.

Two of my recommendations:

Pho' Saigon in the new Chinatown on Lamar and Koriente downtown.

Oh, I wouldn't call the food at the Oasis disgusting - but it's not the draw at all.

Any good cajun places to eat? Louisiana-style cooking, I mean.

Louisiana Longhorn in Round Rock is one.

Only restaurant I've had two religious experiences in one meal at. (Their chicken and sausage gumbo is the best I've had, maybe even including my own. The bread pudding with Bourbon sauce is more variable, but when it's good, I hear angels singing!)

I have heard negative things about Lousiana Longhorn, but good things about Gumbo's - also in Round Rock.

Pizza: East Side Pies, with its thin crust, perfectly oily pies.

Italian: Reale's-- A down-home, red sauce, Northeastern style Italian family restaurant

BBQ: Out of town, Smitty's in Lockhart. It's a religious experience. In town, Ironworks.

Vietnamese: Thanh Nhi. A small and friendly family-run place with some great deals.

Chinese: Asia Cafe. Not much for atmosphere (in the back of a Market), but the most authentic Chinese/Szechuan cuisine in Central Texas.

I don't think the food is disgusting at The Oasis either. I had the fajitas and they weren't bad. Now I admit there are other restaurants that I have liked better.
The Oasis is great place to go, watch the awesome sunsets and enjoy drinks and appetizers. Why do you call it tacky? I didn't find it tacky at all.

IMO, the Oasis' food went along much better with the former atmosphere of the wooden decks and beer umbrellas than it does now after the remodel. Now it is such a beautiful building and the decks are amazing. They need to makeover their menu to make the food match the atmosphere.

I won't eat at Gumbo's. But that may be because I used to eat there way back before they got bought out and went "upscale", when you could actually order just a bowl of gumbo and they had much more of the New Orleans feel and flavor. Went there after they moved to Round Rock, won't go back, I was so disappointed. (But, then, one of my life goals is to go to Baton Rouge and eat my way down to New Orleans, so I take my Louisiana food seriously! )

I've never had a bad (or for that matter, less than outstanding) meal at Louisiana Longhorn. I suspect it's one of those places that you love or you hate, based on the couple of complaints I've heard about it - suspect I wouldn't care for the places those folks WOULD like, for that reason.
