Are there any lounges in Austin that feature good downtempo music ... (Thievery Corp., Kruder & Dorfmeister, that sort of thing)?

I tend to like downtempo, and ambient/art-rock bands like Stereolab, Portishead and Broadcast as well. If anyone knows of lounges and possibly live venues where I'm likely to hear that type of music, I'd appreciate it.

Does Stereolab ever play in Austin when they come to the States?

I think they played at La Zona Rosa on their 2006 tour...

I'm not sure that there are clubs that specifically cater to downtempo - there are many clubs that seem to cover a wide range of stuff. Per the example above, in 2006 La Zona Rosa also presented Hank Williams III, Les Claypool, DJ Shadow, Ministry, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard and Queensryche...pretty much everything But check out these links:

Stereolab,is one of my favorite bands too,and yes they have played here! The Parish used to have some interesting electronic music acts play there a few years ago,but i'm not sure about now.

There's definitely a following here in the Austin area. The local "alternative" radio station here 101X has a show on Sunday mornings called "Chillville" and they mention shows around town during that 3 hour radio show.

101x :: Chillville with Raydog, laid-back Sunday mornings from 9am to noon on 101.5 Austin radio

Thievery Corporation has played Stubbs previously.

Both TC and Massive Attack were on the ACL bill last year. My two favorite groups so it was a good day for me!

I'm anxious to find a place that has some Downtempo to offer as well. If you find a spot please let me know.

Sounds good until you look at the time slot.

Check out the Elephant Room. There's some decent Jazz there from time to time. Just be sure to look at their calendar, it's not always similar style night to night. There's some places on the East side as well but I can't think of the names as I'm pretty new here as well. Are you referring to traditional Jazz only(BeBop, BigBand, standards etc) or do you like Jazz/Rock, Jazz/Pop, lounge etc...I've seen a few decent combos out and about(Austin Java on Sunday mornings) Seeing that you're from N.O., you might not find too much of that style here but I know there is some around...There's also a few Gospel Brunches in town as well(Threadgill's and Stubbs come to mind).

Thanks, Twange, for those links. We'll check out the Elephant Room soon, as well as a couple noted on the Austin Jazz site. Looks like some cabaret style venues there as well. We also enjoy bluesy jazz, as well as the traditional NOLA styles, along with classic R&B with a little funk and zydeco thrown in. Thanks also for the mention of the gospel brunches. Will have to try them out soon as well. Nothing like discovering "new" places!
