Default What Is "Austin Weird" To You?

On another thread, there was a discussion that inspired this thread. "Keep Austin Weird," the saying spawned by an ACC librarian and since co-opted for commercial purposes, is one of our more famous city slogans (we don't, by any means, limit ourselves to just one, of course - that wouldn't be weird, now, would it? ). It got me to thinking - what are examples of "Austin weird" to those of us who live here ("here" being the general Austin area, as we do tend to spread out a bit), to those who are coming here to partake of Austin weirdness, etc.? Leslie, of course, is a prime, and VERY visible, example, but what are others?

So, what says "Austin weird" most to you?

Great thread. I'm interested to know what weird things I've missed on my previous visits! Can't wait to read more responses.

Austin weird to me is public access TV, Alex Jones (on radio and public access). One of the reasons I still have cable, every once and a while I need to see some crazy access TV. Used to be much crazier, though.

Also, in no particular order:

Spamarama, Eeyores, the impossibly uncomfortable hot sauce festival in August, the Cap 10K (used to have so many more costumes!), Hippy Hollow (the idea of it, anyway), a steady line of eccentric politicans or wanna-be politicians, Roky Erickson, Daniel Johnston, Mike Judge, the people who live in the Barton Creek greenbelt, the north loop neighborhood...

and all the really weird stuff that can't be disclosed. You'll just have to stumble upon it yourself.

Well, he aint technically Austin, but I'd say old man Luecke out to Smithville qualifies as as a Texas original. If you've never been out to the Luecke place and would like to check it out, try this:

Go to Google maps and search for Smithville, TX
Set your view to satellite
Zoom out one level and see if you can pick out the Luecke spread.

Obviously the guy has some spare cash available. I can't imagine what the survey cost to lay that out!
