Moving to Austin with family of five
We are moving to Austin this summer and I would appreciate some suggestions of areas to buy a house. Price range $185,000 - $200,000; 2400 square feet +; Our children will be attending a private school so we don't need to know about the public school system; family friendly neighborhood; within 20-30 min. drive to north Austin. Realtor has suggested Manor and Pflugerville but says if we are lucky we may find a home in our price range in Round Rock or Cedar Park. We love to be outside, love big trees, and a great view. Thanks for your suggestions!

A lot of it depends on where in N Austin you will be driving everyday, traffic can vary greatly, that is a large search area with a lot of neighbirhoods. Where will you be commuting to?

From Manor to N. Austin (how far north) will suck royally. Pf won't be much better, but the toll road helps. South Cedar Park is a quick zip down 183, so it's ok. Go to the the statesman.com during rush hour and go to weather/traffic map and see where the daily backups are.

This home in Leander is less than 15 minutes from the Arboretum...I think Leander is good for open spaces & views, and the 183A toll makes getting around really easy.

Thanks. We'll be commuting to the zip code 78757. It is about five minutes south of the Arboretum.
Sounds like 183 doesn't get as conjested as 35. Is that correct? I am thinking to pay a bit more for a house off of 183 might be better than paying more in fuel and frustration for a house off of 35. Any thoughts?

I'd think Cedar Park/Round Rock/South Georgetown would be good possibilities. (Especially with Parmer already through you've got a "back way" to 183A.)

I agree, you'd rather drive down 183 than 35 as a general rule. Mopac can get pretty bad, too (also called Loop 1).
I would try to stay in Northwest Austin. Have you looked in zip 78759? There are some older neighborhoods with beautiful trees that are very family friendly. Lots of shopping and restaurants, too.

We love older neighborhoods. However, so far we have found the square footage on older homes is too small for us.

A quick search of the MLS with your criteria and Cedar Park/Leander as the area turns up 34 hits of homes built from the late 1990's on.
Nothing in 78759, unfortunately.
