planning a fun weekend in Austin
Hi there. I have a really good friend who is planning a weekend in Austin with her sister. They both have kids and are in their mid thirties. They are wondering what are the highlights that people should visit while there for a weekend. They are especially interested in small venues to see live music. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Are they bringing the kids with them, or not?

Check out what's playing at Guerro's (South Congress). They have great Mexican food and an outdoor area with live music on the weekends. Continental Club for late evening live music. Stubb's BBQ (downtown) has live music and BBQ of course. 6th Street may have some things, but I have found that a lot of really good music happens OFF 6th St and I sort of think 6th caters more to the drunken college crowd. There are soooo many places to eat. Home Slice Pizza on South Congress is good. They'll have to get some Amy's Ice Cream (various locations, but there's one on South Congress). On Barton Springs Rd (south of the lake off Congress next to Zilker Park) there are a bunch of fun restaurants - The Shady Grove has burgers/chili, etc. and live music.
When they get here, they should pick up a Chronicle. The latest issue will have all the music listings and restaurant advertisements.
