Default Where's the closest skiing?

I know it won't be convenient, but I'm wondering how far you have to travel to get somewhere with decent skiing. Do I just need to plan on going to Colorado for that?

Thanks.

Taos, Red River and Angel Fire NM are all closer, but still a long drive. Do what I did and join a ski club. The Texas Ski Council has a site with links to ski clubs in Austin, Dallas, Houston SAT and every other mid-large city.

I always claim that I can find a condo and airfare as cheap as they can, but they have killer prices on lift tickets. This January we paid $259 for a 6 day ticket in Vail, vs about $90/day for walk-up. And I'm going with the same friends I've skied with for 20 years.

I would go to Lake Austin myself ....

....unless you mean SNOW skiing .

Then I recommend either Riudoso (sp?) in southern NM, which has suprisingly good conditions, often better than some of the northern NM locations. In NM, you can go to Taos, Sandia, Santa Fe, Red River, and others. I have had terrible luck with Angel Fire - more like skiing on concrete every time I have been there (4 or 5 times) - but I suspect that is just bad luck. There is a really small, fun place called Sippapu kind of between Taos and AF in the forest up there...only ~1000' vertical and 20 runs or so, but no crowd (at least didn't used to be) and excellent snow (it is the top 1000' feet of the mtn ). All these can be driven in a day, if you want. We actually used to drive to Cuchara Valley in S. CO or Creste Butte in SW CO in a day, as well.

Yes, you just need to go to Colorado for that! Southwestern Colorado is the closest: Wolf Creek, Telluride, Purgatory

We have friends with a house in Ruidoso, NM. I know that my husband has flown to El Paso then rented a car and driven the rest of the way for a long weekend trip. The flight is relatively short and the drive is about 2.5 hours.

Texas residents can't ski!!
Well, that's how it seemed when I arrived w/ my snow board, boots @ the slopes in Red River, NM.

Two guys talking crap b/c they saw my Texas plates when I pulled into the parking lot. To prove them wrong, I did a 720 off a 2' launch, then on the 4' launch I did a Misty, they got quite very, very quick! Lot's of people here ski. I just have not found any that snow board, but they'll buy one and look cool holding it. I got more picture snappers friends that goes snowboarding w/ me. LOL.
