Austin Apartments, for non students.
My husband and I are looking into moving to Austin, for a career change. The place he would be working is a few blocks away from the old capitol building on congress ave. He's had to commute over an hour to work for the past 6 years, so we really want to be as close to that location as possible. Here's what we're looking for:
1. A 2 Bed. we're pretty flexible on the price, $800-$1000 would be ideal though.
2. We have a cat
3. Somewhere that's not a college apt, I'm mean... we're in our 20s, but we don't really party and we don't want totally loud neighbors (this I'm sure is going to be the hardest part about wanting to stay close to the job site since it seems pretty close to the college)
Just from looking at a website real quick here's a few places that looked nice:
Oak Run Apartments
1304 Summer Oak Dr
Hampton Park Terrace
4100 Victory Drive
Woodmoor
3505 S. Lamar Blvd
Capitol Village
6855 Hwy. 290 E
Travis Station
6600 Ed Bluestein Blvd.
Any Suggestions? Any places or zip codes we might want to stay away from? Thanks sooOooOOoO much for any help! We're pretty excited about moving there.

If anyone knows about a post that already talks about this issue can you let me know where to find it? I'm sure some one has probably brought this up before! Thanks

Hi, my husband and I lived in Austin for a while and we were on a budget but wanted to live in a safe, good neighborhood which was also conveniently located. We were in Hyde Park, 78751, which is pretty much what we were looking for. There are many grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. nearby, and it is not far from downtown (10 min drive, maybe less). We felt safe and comfortable there and never had any problems. I just suggest you stay west of I-35; there are many complexes where you will find a peaceful atmosphere, without noisy neighbors. Just be aware of the pest control, there are many bugs...but Austin is a wonderful place to be. Hope this helps!

I too am in the same boat. Looking for a 3 bed 2 bath for around 1500.00 away from college kids and an overabundance of families. We are all single and in our late 20's / early 30's Any suggestions? We would like to be as close to downtown or SOCO as possible.

I agree, Hyde Park is a good place to live, close to everything. Quite a few apartment complexes there plus many homes for rent too. I'd stay out of the direct vicinity of UT and to the west of UT to Lamar.
If you're looking as far over as Ed Bluestein and 290 East I'd try further up Mopac around Far West as well. Lots of places to rent there.

You should be able to get something right in 78704 for that price range no problem.

I lived in the Woodmoor apartments for 3 years and I can recommend it. I think the 78704 zip code is the best area to live in and there are many apartment options.

Hi everyone, thanks for the help so far. We are now FOR SURE moving to Austin. Most likely by the end June or very early July. These are the apartments we're looking into, we have heard the same thing about the 78704 zip code from a few people now so we want to stay in that area. If you have any input on these apartment complexes that would be great!!!! Thanks again. Oh also if there's a place I didn't list here that you can recommend that would also be helpful!

I would not count on 100% getting away from students, as there are some in every complex within a 2-mile radius of the school. You just want to eliminate the ones with majority students, or the rowdy ones....best way is to get something as high end as your budget will allow, or rent a house.....rule of thumb, the cheaper the complex, and the more pools, the more students.

In Austin, families are in most complexes, as so many people are moving to the area, and either haven't or are not ready to live in a house yet.
Mine had em all over. They were pretty decent though, and just hung around the pool....actually, I felt sorry, as I could not imagine growing up in an apt. complex......

Thanks, now that we're having to move so quickly I'm a bit less worried about the student population. I've heard that being closer to the river is not as nice as it is a bit further south towards 290 anyone know if that's true? I also heard something about homeless people living in Gus Fruth Park?? I've never been to Austin so I'd appreciate all the help I can get!! Thanks
