Default Livng in Austin, commute to Harker Heights

Hi everyone! I am possibly transferring to the Harker Heights area this fall. I would have liked to stay closer to Austin. Im from Atlanta so I prefer a city lifestyle. Would a commute from Round Rock or Georgetown to Harker Heights be a bad idea? Looks like its approximately an hour commute. Any thoughts? How is the Harker Heights area for someone in their late 20's?

Harker Heights is Killeen...an army base. It would be made up of military families mostly. Now, Austin is a whole other story for someone in their late 20's...

Quite a few people who are stationed at or work at Ford Hood live in Georgetown. It's a reasonable commute for them. Some live in Round Rock and commute, as well.

FYI,

Maybe some people can find happiness in Austin but I'm leaving becasue the subculture is more arrogant and snotty then any stuck up rich person."I want to be famous or my band is playin tonight".Also the town is full of pot and coke heads with a locals only dude duh..hu attitude which is apparent anytime you try to drive down a major road there abruptly changing lanes and never using a turn signal if there life depended on it.People might be nice on the surface there.. but it's a big scam. The wage in Austin is high but the cost of living there is higer and rising.I was listening to the radio 93.7 klbj and some typical redneck idiot from Austin was informing the DJ there that the high gas prices are making it hard on the drug dealers gee what great place to live A small backward town now with all the big city problems.I guess to get promoted at your job there you can move up fast getting high with your manager at least that's how i've seen it work.Oh did I forget the coruption and prostitution I think you can get heroin there too off runberg lane Have a nice day !!!!

I did the opposite commute for about 6 months. I lived in Killeen, and commuted to Round Rock. It was about a 45 min drive each way, with not much traffic. This was 11 years ago though. Not sure what it would be like today. As far as life for late 20 somethings, many people who live there go to Austin for nightlife.

Turthhurts (sic), I suspect you are judging an entire city on a tiny portion of it, as I have never experienced/seen/known anyone to experience what you're describing.

Not that what you're describing doesn't exist (in Austin and any other city), but it's so far off from the reality that's described and lived on a daily basis by thousands of Austinites that it's not a fair description of the city (or any city) in any way, shape, or form.

Lots of people live in Harker Hts/Killeen and commute down to Austin to work. The cost of living here is about 10 years behind the times and the wages are higher in Austin. Alot of HH/Kln folks work at Dell in Round Rock and commute.
