Hays County is not a dry county but the precinct (i think) where Salt Lick is located is.

Here's the wiki post on it:
Of Texas's 254 counties, 46 are completely dry, 169 are partially dry or "moist", and 39 are entirely wet. The vast majority of entirely wet counties are in southern border regions of Texas near Mexico, or in the south central part of the state. The patchwork of laws can be confusing, even to residents. In some counties, only 4% beer is legal. In others, beverages that are 14% or less alcohol are legal. In some "dry" areas, a customer can get a mixed drink by paying to join a "private club," and in some "wet" areas a customer needs a club membership to purchase liquor by-the-drink, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The newspaper demonstrates how variable the alcohol laws can be, even within small geographic areas. "Move from Fort Worth to Arlington and you’ll be surprised that you can buy beer but not wine at the grocery store. Move to Grand Prairie and you can’t even find beer there, but you can buy alcoholic drinks at restaurants in both towns. Then move to Burleson, which has alcohol sales in the Tarrant County portion of the city but not in the Johnson County side of town."[19]

Wow, didn't know that about the dry precinct. But I guess that makes sense, as when I lived in Dallas there were areas within Dallas County that were wet, and others that were dry.

Down the street from the Salt Lick at that Trattoria they serve alcohol... it's about 2 miles away, so it could be a different precinct. But the Salt Lick owner is also building a vineyard (and housing development) on the land adjacent to the SL.. and I'm sure there will be alcohol tasting there. I'd suspect if the owners wanted that to be no longer a "dry" precinct, they could make it happen. But they just don't want to, just like they don't want to take credit cards

Actually, they started taking credit cards.

I would sooooo second the Alamo Drafthouse suggested by Mike. Nothing like any place I've ever been. Perfectly serviceable food, served at your seat by a cast of fun people, along with decent beer (or beverage of choice), while watching a kookie movie, or a new release if you must. I've been thinking recently how freaked the CEO of one the national movie theater chains would be if they visited the Alamo. Now THAT is Austin - in a nutshell.

Words can't even describe how excited I am to go to the Alamo Drafthouse! It was the one real bummer of my trip that I didn't go.

Movies, food, & beer. Three of my favorite things!
