My hubby and I are considering moving to Austin and will be in town in 2 weeks for our research trip (staying in Round Rock). We were hoping to find some good salsa clubs/hangouts for some dancing while visiting. Not to offend anyone, but we are more specifically interested in actual Salsa as opposed to TexMex or Tejano music. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Also, does anyone know of any Puerto Rican restaurants or Cuban restaurants? I've heard of Habana....how's their food?

Thanks a bunch!!

Sunday nights at the Oasis there is Salsa. It's very popular. They also have lessons. The Brew is the band that plays, you could check out the other places they play for Salsa spots -- Austin, Texas, USA - Salsa Nirvana

The best Caribbean food by far is at Casa Colombia on 7th street. They have dishes from PR and Cuba too. They know how to fry plantain and yuca! The menu is online.
Habana is OK but their Cuban sandwiches are great. There's a Puerto Rican place in Round Rock called El Flamboyan Cafe, but I haven't tried it yet.

There is Copa Bar & Grill that has live music on Th.-Sat., there is also Ruta Maya's which has a cuban night on either Wed. or Thursday.

There is also an Austin Salsa group in the Yahoo groups. You may want to check them out as well.

I second Casa Colombia and add Dona Emilia. Latin Cafe Austin: explore a new continent of flavor
Dona Emilia is more upscale, but also has delicious food and lots of tropical dishes and dancing. It was started by the Casa Colombia chef and her son. They sold it and started Casa Colombia.
