Default Recommendations for a finish carpenter?

I am stuck with two deep and tall recessed areas on each side of our fireplace (WHY OH WHY do builders do this!?). We looked into getting bookshelves/cabinets made and installed from Thomasville at Home Depot and was quoted around $8,000 for labor, cabinets, installation with mouldings, etc. I can't stomach paying that much for 2 cabinets. That sounds ridiculously overpriced to me.

Does anyone have any recommendations for finish carpenters? If so, does anyone have photos of their work or a web address, if available?

I would recommend using servicemagic.com.

I used them to find a painter. You'll get multiple calls (very quickly I might add) from local service providers who will give you a free quote. Once you narrow it down to 1 or 2, you can solicit specific feedback on them in this forum.

BTW, why don't you simply fill them with pieces of furniture, like armoires? A couple of them, even high-end ones, should run you significantly less.

I've also seen these areas filled with tapestries and faux paintings.

Awesome, I'll definitely give that a shot. We could fill them in with armoires although finding ones that fit nicely is a hassle - especially due to the height and width of the spaces.

if you are bookish, how about bookcases? or cupboards (or space for firewood) about 3 feet high and bookcases above. or artwork above.

simple to do and books and art make a design statement....

whoops! you already said bookcases! sorry... but if you don't want to go with built-in cabinets, floating shelves have a nice, clean look. depends on the house.

Call Craftcorps. They have finish carpenters NOT framing carpenters trying to do finish work. They're not the cheapest but they are the best!

Default Finish carpenter

I know a great finish carpenter. Does beautiful work with mantels, storage, paneling, staircases, creative, amazing work. I've been in a number of his houses - he is a perfectionist and a great guy, and although I haven't done direct comparisons, I think he is reasonable. Here's his e-mail: rmaze@austin.rr.com.
