Sex offender by school grounds!!??
I still have to make some calls and do more research, but I thought that Williamson County, so famously known about their law enforcement, would allow sex offender to live anywhere near school grounds!!
Other states won't allow them to live anywhere closer than one mile from any school.
Our child will be going to Brushy Creek Elementary next year and I was so worried about the traffic on Great Oaks and the fact that their playground is completely open... Well, I worry about the traffic no more! I found out that there is a "moderate risk" sex offender living not only near but right across the street from the school!! How can this be allowed?
Here is one of the better sites where you can check on this kind of information: National Sex Offender Registry I double checked with the DPS (government) site and sure enough, the information in the other site is accurate.
Does anyone now about county, city, state or any kind of laws that would try to protect children from this kind of risk??
My husband and I are shocked!!

There are no guarantees or reduced risk because there are no known sex offenders nearby. The greatest risk is probably from those who are not identified and they could be anywhere.
Worry more about those who come into regular contact with your child and are trusted by them than a stranger who lives near the school. (Coaches, scout leaders, youth ministers, etc).
If you hound this person from their home where the police know where to find them, you might make them go underground and then there is no supervision at all.
Teach your children to stand up to adults and not to be afraid to say "no!" and not to be afraid to come to you with anything.
yes, I am a parent of young children too and I worry but I worry more about predators not yet known to the system and I worry more about people in contact with my kids than strangers.

Buy the safeside dvd and watch it with your kid (s) . It was created by John Walsh of AMW and Julie Clark founder of Baby Einstein. It has a lot of great info for kids to learn about stranger safety, personal space etc... It's well worth the money.

I think there are different types of sex offenders. The DPS website (I think that's the one), will tell you more info like the age of the offender and the age/sex of the victim and the charge. When I read offender male/56 and victim female(or male)/8...then yes, that's worrisome. When I read offender male/20 and victim female/17 and the charge is statutory rape...I don't necessarily think the offender is a child molester. I'm not excusing the behavior, but as citizens we need to use our brains and inform ourselves. The label "sex offender" is so broad.

Last year, I believe it was, this came up in Hutto (Williamson County). It was before the City Council and it was not voted through to make sex offenders live less than a mile away from a school for the same reasons stated by rosered. At first, this really got my goat, but it is true. At least people and law enforcement are aware of who they are and where they live. There is a listed one in my neighborhood, and believe me he can't even go to the end of his driveway to get his newspaper without anyone knowing and watching what he's up to.

I'm sorry but this just gets my goat. I'm a big believer in capital punishment (CP), i have heard people say that Texas is very gung-ho with CP but then I think there are times it is never used enough or fast enough. I have cousins that were raped by their neighbor, they were 3 and 5 years old in Houston... the guy only got six years prison. There is NO WAY that sentence is enough. The man should have been shot right where he stood. I dont think any person who rapes any one should be given a second chance at life (period). It has been proven over and over that these people are sick in their heads, can't be cured and will do it again... so why are they let out and given second, third chances? I've checked and no sex offenders are living by me, they are lucky in my book cuz I'd make their lives miserable.... I would have no sympathy for them at all. They dug their own hole, they should do the world a favor and bury themselves.

I'm with you, itcoastie.
I lean pretty far to the left politically, but when it comes to kids and sex offenses... I say torture them (the rapist) THEN kill them. Painfully.

your experience is gruesome, but please do remember that some sex offenders are different from others ... sometimes domestic violence, or an 18 year old messing with a 17 year old, get classified as sexual offenses.
We have a guy in the latter situation in my current neighborhood. He is now 50 without any other incident. You do not want to focus on a guy like this and let someone actually dangerous slip through the cracks.
The person you mention in Houston, as well as the school with 4 child-assault convicts living next door is unacceptable in my book, but please do do your research before you jump. Especially in Texas, conviction information is readily available with great detail.
