I just thought of something this afternoon. After all the growth the major texas cities have experienced the last 10 years or so, perhaps infrastructure and energy costs will preclude, if not regress, any further growth. It's all about containment and infrastructure. Either a city has the means and funds to absorb growth, and the aforementioned infrastructure, or, it simply does not. Austin in particular, amongst Texas cities, has had trouble keeping up with road infrastructure. Now, my main point....add the 4-6 dollars a gallon gas prices in the next two years to the inadequate roads, bridges, and general access, never mind bike access or park systems, and try to extrapolate where that brings growth in that same two or so years. Keep in mind that Austin rapid transit is esssentially non-existent, with no means to radiate people through the metro in anything approximating a centralized direction.
This could mean the city could actually shrink, and cause folks to leave the metro for cities that present more affordable and reasonable means of getting around. At the very least, there would be a refocus on urban living and higher density construction in the central city.

What would you folks say would be the impact of 4-6 buck a gallon gasoline on Texas metros with negligible rapid transit? Would it absolutely prohibit further growth in an era of 6-10 dollar a gallon gas?
