I did the race in 2000 and have been a volunteer every year since then (got smart...ride the bank now

).
Anyway, if you are looking to get involved in the safari, go down on Friday afternoon and watch the check-in and the orientation to get an idea about it and start 'networking'. Saturday morning, the race starts at 9:00, and most will be too tense to talk to ya

.
You can follow the race fairly easily the first day through several of the river crossings. It will definitely get you in the spirit to do it, if you lean that way anyway. The route map is online with directions to all the official and unoffical check points, and there will be a veritale caravan of cars the first day, since the racers don't spread out really until the first night.
The group of people that compete/put on this race definitely represents the core of central Texas canoeing/kayaking, if not for the whole state. Very good group of people, although the top few teams have been at it for decades and have a grudge match going and are not so social/open. There is also the Colorado River 100 (CR100), the Texas River Marathon, Jr. Water Safari, and the Barrier to the Bay. The CR100 is organized by a differnt entity, but lots of overlap.
The unofficial (but most popular) race forum is here:

Btw, where are you from?
Not sure if you are looking for canoe racing or adventure sports, but the Texas Canoe Racing Association website is:
