I know quite a few who make liberal use of "fixin' to" and put "fixins" on the baked potato .

As for warm water....depends on where you go. The gulf is well into the 80s in the summer, as is Lake Travis. Any of the 'power' lakes (i.e. Decker Lake) will be quite warm, too. The natural pools and rivers stay quite cool, though, since they are (as mentioned above) primarily spring fed.

I agree. It sure beats the hell out of you'ns, which all of my relatives from P.A. use. Being a Great-Laker myself, "you guys" is branded into my cerebral cortex(not to be confused with the NJ "yous guys"). I've become very self-aware of this since moving here, especially after some lady seemed to take offense I assured her that it wasn't meant in a derogatory fashion

Seriously though, come check Austin out. You'll be surprised that your stereotypes don't hold too well.

I say "you guys" all the time, I'm a habitual offender. I can see how that would be disrespectful down south, it's not a very classy thing to say to a lady. I love ya'll so if I do go down there I will just use that. lol. Its awesome that you guys have water that stays cool!! Now I just have to watch out for Alligators!!! I don't want to be someones lunch!

Btw, it is y'all, not ya'll ...and the alligators are pretty much limited to the year round warm water E and SE of here....now, the water moccasins are another thing .

I agree......stereotypes don't bode much, largely because the population of Austin doubled since 1990, from 350,000 to 700,000, and the very vast majority of the relocatees were from out-of-state. This created what you might call a gateway city of in-migration, as opposed to the coastal cities that attract international migrants, legal and illegal, and are largely cosmopolitan as well...Las Vegas and Atlanta, along with perhaps the research triangle in NC, and Portland, are a few others of that ilk.....
and interesting why it happened.........

Was really just waiting to happen.....around 90. tech got huge, microsoft and software in general exponentially increased their programs, the web was just starting to flesh into reality, and tech workers were looking for that next big thing city, as Seattle and Silicon Valley were getting very expensive.....Austin came on the radar, sort of created itself from wholecloth as a tech research and manufacturing center, the techies came, the artists followed(the ones not endemic to austin, that is), and Austin became a cool city, and on the national radar for the first time.....now it is a gateway city, and even folks from jersey can come here comfortable that they will fit into what is really just an anglo culture created by inmigration, much from california....and there you are....modern day Austin, safe for all who fear real southern culture and real southern cities.....
for a real southern city, try Little Rock, Nashville, Memphis, Louisville, New Orleans, Charleston, Charlotte, or Birmingham...for a city that apologizes for being southern, keeps at arms length from the moniker, and is safe for people who would never fit into a bona-fide southern city,
try Austin, Tex....the real east LA! LOL!

No alligators in Austin waterways. Now, Houston and other places just along the coastline will have them.

Oh, don't worry about it. I was just being funny. In fact the woman who got indignant was from Arkansas! All of the people I know here think it's funny. I will start saying "ya'll when it becomes part of my speech naturally, just from being here. Kind of like a tadpole losing its tail!

Twange, the funniest thing up north, is when teen-age girls call out to other girls, "Hey you guys", and it sounds plausible. You don't even think of the gender connotations..it just sounds normal to them, and anyone within earshot.......

Per the y'all, I started saying it in about 6 months...when I came back to visit in Chicago, I had to try hard NOT to say it......i just like how I sound more
with the southern cadences and all...it just suits me a bit more.....so I guess I just took to it.

There will NEVER be another frank zappa....too bad his progeny weren't able to carry on, but what progeny ever does...look at Julian and sean lennon for proof, both of whom have played in Austin the last year, ironically.....wish I was making that up...they both played at the Parish...why, I have no idea..and not at the same time or date...remember that one year, 1981, when Julian was a big thing, for about 2 months?
