They were repairing a power line over the highway at 1431 and 35. I don't know if that was the only reason it was closed, but I got on 35 at 5:00 and it was shut down at the ramp. I don't know why they couldn't repair it at night.

Lines fell -- I assume from an accident. I heard the news on the radio and they said that I-35 was closed (at 1431 I think) due to electrical lines down on the roadway.

Default It was a bank robbery!

I-35 police chase ends with crash, suspect in hospital

Updated: 7/29/2009 8:09 PM

A bank robbery in central Austin ended with a crash and shooting on Interstate-35 in Georgetown Wednesday afternoon.
The scene began when the suspect robbed the Bank of America near I-35 and 38th 1/2 Street in Central Austin.
"He had a gun, demanded money and left the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash," Austin Police Department Officer Veneza Aguinaga said.

A medevac chopper was called to the scene.
Shortly thereafter, tracking a device hidden with the stolen cash, officers located the suspect in his truck. When the suspect realized authorities were on his trail, he fled, heading north on I-35.
"When he reached the city limits of Austin the suspect began throwing cash out of the window," APD Cpl. Scott Perry said.
Once the suspect entered Georgetown, police said he lost control of his vehicle. He then got out of the car with a female, pointed a gun to her head and began walking north, with the woman, on the interstate.
"Our deputy told the suspect, 'You need to drop it'," Det. John Foster said. "Numerous officers told the suspect numerous times, 'You need to drop it.' He did not."

News 8's Reagan Hackleman explains the events of the second incident to tie up rush hour traffic around Austin this week.

A Williamson County deputy fired one shot hitting the suspect.
"He believes that was the appropriate decision, and as of right now, I do too," Foster said.
The suspect was flown to Brackenridge Hospital, where he's in critical condition.
Police are calling the female a hostage.
"We don't know what her involvement was in the robbery itself and we don't know what, if any, relationship those two have," Perry said.
Northbound Interstate-35 north of Georgetown closed Wednesday afternoon following the police chase and the crash. Traffic backed up for miles and drivers were diverted to other roads.
Foster said he's just glad things didn't get worse.
"We're fortunate we didn't have more people hurt," he said.

This is the second time this week that the SWAT team has had to shut down a major road in Austin due to a man with a gun.
