So what do Austinites do when the freezing rain we're supposed to get over the next 36 hours hits?

Do you stay in and wait it out or do you go on with your life?

We heard nightmare stories about hundreds of cars sliding off the 2222 right near our house last year and we're trying to determine whether we should go out for dinner

This weather wouldn't stop Chicagoans, but I think it would grind Phoenix to a halt. What do Austinites do?

Gigi, trust me, if you don't need to venture out, don't. You have never seen a bigger mess in your life than when we get ice here. Last year there were something like 700 traffic accidents in one day because of icy conditions! Of course, tonight should be fine except the roads are wet. I think the icy stuff is expected Monday morning which is perfect timing since it's a holiday.

Yes, icy roads are a rare event in Austin. You've got a city filled with thousands of people without the faintest clue on how to navigate such conditions while in their car. Best advice is given by AustinTraveler above:

DON'T GO OUTSIDE. STAY OFF THE ROADS AT ALL COSTS.

Even if you know what you are doing, the likelihood is that those around you do not.

Like you, Gigi, I have to be somewhere at 8:00 on Tuesday morning. I'm hoping the wet weather will have passed through by then and we won't have any ice. Not much else you can do other than hope!

Be careful and have a good trip.

Bummer...I hope your flight isn't cancelled. Do you have a layover somewhere? Things get really thrown out of wack around here during something unusual like an ice storm. If you make it to Austin tomorrow, I would suggest you just chill (pun intended ) somewhere until this passes. At least you have a week to find an apartment.

Let us know if you have any questions while you're in town. Safe travels!!

Glad that I brought my Ice scraper-snow brush with me from Canada. I had to use it this morning :-)

Overall it is not that bad to me
