ominous clarksville tower at 10th & west lynn
Hi,
I am thinking about moving in the nice Clarskville neighborhood. I 've noticed there is a tall tower (antenna or electric) on west lynn and w. 10th street, close to cafe medici & galaxy cafe. I 've googled a bit about this but haven't found any info (notice I am not talking about the harmless moonlight tower on blanco and 12th)
Does anyone know if this tower is operational? If yes, is it an antenna tower or an electrical tower? It 's a bit surprising to see this kind of edifice in a residential area, especially next door to a school. I mean we are probably bombarded with wireless signals anywhere we live these days, but if you live half a mile from this tower, it would be good to know what the heck it's there for.
any info is welcome, thanks

I think it is a historical "moonlight" tower. You can google for more info.

The OP specifically said that it's NOT the moonlight tower that's a bit over from there.
Sorry, I don't know what it is right off the bat, but I'll see if I can find out, if no one else posts before I can do that.

It's owned by the city of Austin, according to Traviscad.org. Street view usually yields some info because of signs or something, but in this case the facility at the base of the tower seems to have no signs.
Anyway, it looks to me like some kind of emergency communications tower. Doesn't look like cell or power.
I'll bet you can call one of the retail businesses across the street, they'll probably know...
but clue us in when you solve the mystery!

The tower was originally constructed by AT&T but the City purchased it about 4 years ago as part of its public safety radio system bond package. The City now leases back the tower to cellular telephone and microwave providers.

I just climbed it. I think the top of that tower gives you the best views of Austin possible.
