Mid Life Move to Austin
Hi all:
New to your forum and hoping I can get some feedback.
Looks like I may be needing to do a mid-life relocation from Wisconsin. I'll be a single almost but not quite 50-year old woman, looking for housing and a job (in the Hospitality Ops field).
I have family in the DFW area, and Austin comes highly recommended.
Having been to TX numerous times, I love what it has to offer, and having family close by (but not too close) is important to me.
So...fire away...would probably rent before buying, so I'm looking for a nice safe area to rent an apt or condo. I will have the assistance of a headhunter on the job front, but any ideas along that way will also be appreciated.
Thanks!
AJ's MOM

Is AJ in school? What price range and what types of things/activities do you like to be near?

Looking for rents from $800 - $1,200.00. Not sure yet on what price range for buying will be.
Two kids actually, daughter - 15 (the "A"), son - 13 (the "J"). Both into soccer, swimming, baseball. I like live music, art festivals and theater.

Where are you thinking that you're likely to be working? Commute could be an issue. If not, then you might want to consider Cedar Park or Round Rock or Pflugerville.

Sounds like you should find the best middle school/high school for A & J close to downtown for the hospitality industry. I don't know much about Austin schools (we're in Leander ISD which is mostly Cedar Park and Leander) but maybe others will help. A lot of people will say Eanes will be the best, but unless your kids are really outstanding in their abilities they may not even make the school teams (they have one large high school.)

And I don't think you'll find a rental for your target price range in Eanes.

You're right...I was just anticipating all the usual "Eanes is best" responses

Nothing wrong with Round Rock or Pflugerville. Schools are good and you can probably find a rental home in that price range in the older neighborhoods.

I did a quick scan on the MLS of Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park (with Leander ISD), and there were many, many houses available for rent in that price range.
