I have an Eames lounge chair and ottoman that I would like to have reupholstered. It's a fairly tricky job, as the cushions have zippers that zip the cushions into the frame of the chair. (It's more complicated than simply re-wrapping a frame, like you'd do with sofa reupholstering.)

Does anybody know a place in Austin that they'd trust with a job like this? I found a place in LA that specializes in this, but they want $900 plus the cost of fabric (and shipping).

Default Toshmahal

this fellow is a carpenter and refinisher of midcentury pieces.
the photos on his website look AMAZING and the testimonials of clients are very positive.

I have some midcentury cabinet doors that I am planning on taking to him. we've e-mailed and he is quick to reply and very, very nice!

http://www.toshmahal.com/

he is in the dallas/fort worth area and NOT in austin, but it's a lot closer than california.

he is NOT a reupholsterer, but he does say that he knows of excellent reupholsterers in the DFW area, and that may be worth investigating for such a fabulous piece as your Eames chair.

in austin, the Upholstery Shop on S. Lamar is very sympathetic to the modernist. we didn't want to spend a lot of $$$ on repairs to a Danish Modern sofa we literally pulled out of the trash...but it needed new strapping under the cushions. they were willing to cut straps for one cushion to see how we liked it, before we went ahead and did the other two. and they had to special-order the material and had no qualms about doing so. excellent service there!

Hope you can find some help from either source. go, midcentury modern!

Default Home Girls

I would drop in and have a chat with the mother/daughter team at Home Girls on Burnet Rd (one of the other mid-century boutiques in the area). The women at Home Girls are really nice and I'm sure would steer you in the right direction.
