Lockhart has a few famous BBQ joints -- Blacks, Smitty's, and (my fav) Kreuz (pronounced Krites) Market.

But for an Austin feel, I'd recommend going to driftwood (about 16 miles) and go to the Salt Lick. While you are out there, go 2 more miles down the road to see the beautiful Mandola winery. Hamilton pool is also out that way:

Also in town, I like Iron Works BBQ right by the convention center in downtown.

Me too I vote for Iron Works too right downtown. Lockhart is better but you have to decide is the gas worth it.

Another vote for Ironworks...my favorite!

Last night at the concert I had a BBQ sandwich from the Salt Lick vendors. I don't know how it compares to the actual Salt Lick but it was not good at all. The sauce is very mustardy and the meat really didn't have much of a smokiness to it. And I am not even going to try and describe the potato salad, at least that's what they were calling it.

If you're going as far as Lockhart, keep going on to City Market in Luling. You won't be sorry.

There is a much more algae than usual at Barton Springs right now, but glad you liked it! I'm not much for swimming on the dog part... and the real pool is only a few bucks anyway.

Oh, and the county line is great too! You ate at the County Line "on the lake". That's my favorite of the two County Lines.
