It was so bad at my apartment complex in college, I made a sign that read something like "Whatever you are selling, I am not buying. This includes magazines, coupon books, oil changes, stolen stereo equipment, and salvation. DO NOT KNOCK IF I DO NOT PERSONALLY KNOW YOU!"
It actually worked. I remember sitting on the couch with the windows open watching TV when the mormons showed up, stared at the sign, and left.

Get a Hobby!
I am the general manger of a furniture company and as part of our pro active marketing we canvass neighborhoods and put flyers on doors. We are a business that is trying to survive in not only a competitve market, but also in these tough economic times. We put out about 1,000 flyers a week and at least once a month there is some retard calling my store complaining. I've been cursed at and even threatened. Get a life! If someone leaves a flyer on your door and you are not interested in the product or service throw it away. There is no need to get so upset. Obviously everyone complaining has never worked in the sales fields where your salary depends on your volume of sales. So my suggestion is get a hobby-reading, gardening, whatever. Then somehow maybe a flyer on your door won't ruin your whole week.

It allows thieves to case your house. If you want to walk around a neighborhood in the middle of the day to see who is home and what doors are locked, just carry a stack of flyers with you. It's the perfect alibi, that's my problem with it.

It's an annoyance issue, that's part of the reason we have HOA's - say what you will about them, but if HOA's can't keep out solicitors, no one can.

They've taken it to a new height here in Phoenix where they tape the flier to the top of your garage door. So, you don't notice it until you're coming home from somewhere and you either have to get out of the car before opening the garage door or go back out to remove it after you've closed it. When it's 118* outside, this goes beyond annoying.
And, I also agree that it's trespassing and littering. And that goes for the people that put the fliers under my windshield wipers in parking lots, too.

And, you sir, have just guaranteed I'll NEVER buy furniture from someone who fliers my house. And since we'll be in the market for several thousand dollars worth of furniture in the coming months, maybe you'll rethink acting like a jerk to homeowners who have enough pride in their homes to not want litter all over them and find a smarter, more effective way to boost your sales.
And I have worked in sales where my paycheck was directly affected by the volume and know annoying my customer base, then insulting them for being annoyed is just plain counter-productive.

Some of them tape the flyers with cheap tape that takes forever to wash the glue off and some time the paint on the door get ruined.
I have saved some of them to make sure I will NEVER use their services!

If I am reading this correctly the city of Lakeway has an ordinance against unpermitted solicitations:
http://www.cityoflakeway.com/DocumentView.asp?DID=159
What do you all think of such an ordinance for city of Austin?

Stan: "Do you think the guy who litters your house is really a jerk?"
Dan: "Probably, because if I ran a business, I would understand how much that annoyed, rather than attracted, any potential customers."
