Honeymoon in Austin...Ideas?
Hey everyone! I'll try to keep this short.
I am getting married next Friday and eyeballing Austin as a place to go. We don't have much money now, so we can only plan, not book, unfortunately. We have to wait for $$ gifts then go from there. We'd be driving from Omaha, NE.
Does anyone have any ideas for a really romantic place to stay in Austin? Also, what would be fun for newlyweds to do down there?
We've toyed with the notion of moving there too, but know very little. Besides the romantic stuff, what would be the best way to experience Austin and where?
Thanks!!

Most of the hotels I think about as being "Romantic" come with a pretty hefty price tag. If you want to splurge (it is your honeymoon), The Driskill would be my choice. But if you want to save a little money and still have a great time, here are a few ideas:
Bed and Breakfast Inns: Austin Bed and Breakfasts
Holiday Inn Town Lake (I know, I know, it's a Holiday Inn, but it's in a great location and right on the water and recently rennovated: Holiday Inn AUSTIN Hotels | AUSTIN-TOWN LAKE | Welcome
And...as much as I hate to send you somewhere else, you might check out the Riverwalk in San Antonio.
As for things to do...tell us what you like - music, museums, nature, water activites? There is a thread right now about the 10 MUST SEE things in Austin, check it out.

If you're Nebraska fans, stay out of Austin. This is Longhorn Country, period.

Nebraska fans are the classiest anywhere. They are welcome here anytime.
However, I'd echo the suggestion of a previous poster to check out San Antonio as well. It's supposed to be the most romantic city in TX. I'm sure if you post on the SA forum you may get some really good suggestions.
In Austin, the hotels would be the Driskill, The Stephen F. Austin, the Hyatt on town lake.. if you don't mind a noisier setting, the Hotel San Jose ( Hotel San Jose) is a favorite "hip" boutique hotel on S Congress.

It's not overly romantic, but you can get the Hyatt on Congress for usually $80 a night or so on priceline. You'd be close to everything!

Yeah, seriously, I would forget "romantic" since you're low on funds and just go with a great hotel downtown. Once you're here, you'll be able to explore the area all you want since you'll have a car. Be sure to check out the hike and bike trail downtown, the South Congress district, Mount Bonnell, and Lake Travis. Any other stuff will depend on what you like to do and what you want to experience, so let us know!

Lake Austin Spa is pretty darn romantic! If you're on a budget, I'd check into a B&B in Fredricksburg or Gruene. Pretty, quiet and romantic/quaint. Not sure about prices, but might be doable. Congrats!

You're either not a Longhorn fan or you've never been to a Nebraska/Texas game. So in that case, you have no authority in making that statement. Do you not remember all the fights/heckling that went on at the Big 12 Championship in San Antonio? Have you ever been to a game in Nebraska? I'll agree that in general, their "older" fan base is a whole lot better than most other schools, however, their students and "younger" fans are about as bad as they come. Maybe you're older and have sat in or around the alumni or whatever, but I can tell you first hand that their student body can be just as bad as I've seen. They don't like Texas, period. They like to come into our backyard in Austin and a lot of them live in Texas, but they absolutely despise The University of Texas as a whole. So really, you have no idea, obviously.

That's the biggest load of BS I've seen you drop lately, AustinTexan. It's so obviously wrong -- just look at the original post of this thread! It's people from Nebraska wanting to visit Austin on their Honeymoon, for pete's sake! You think they despise Texas?
Listen, I am a Longhorn fan and alum, I've been to the Texas/Nebraska games here in Austin and I was at the Big 12 championship game you are referring to. Clearly, you are clueless about college football if you won't acknowledge the fact that the Husker fans are among the classiest in the game. They cheer and sing the opponent's fight song in the stands after the game, even when they lose to us in Lincoln. They are always respectful, friendly, and lots of fun at tailgates, and they don't do the "horns down" symbol. Perhaps it is their very storied and successful history that allows them to take things in stride and be good sports nowadays.. but the fact, the very well known fact, that you seem to be completely in the dark about, is they have some of the best fans out there.
There are always a few obnoxious over-served people rooting for any school, not unlike some obnoxious posters on this board. However, Nebraska fans seem to frown upon that contingent of fans more than any other major university... even our own. We've got classy fans, I think, but I'd say we have more obnoxious jerks than NU. Still, NU and UT are fans are miles above the OUs, Ohio States, and Texas Techs of the world.
But this is all common knowledge. I can't believe I am even bothering to explain it to you. This is something you would explain to a 3rd grader watching college football for the first time. I'd recommend you spend some time on the Longhorn forums and come back when you've learned a thing or two.
BTW, you know who else has classy fans? USC. Not the T-Shirt LA area fans, but the real ones that go to games. I was at the Rose Bowl in '06, and experienced it first hand. Good fans.
Anyway, SORRY for my part in allowing this thread to go off topic! But I thought the honor of the NU fan should be defended, even if it is by a Longhorn.
