new wave dancing in Austin?
Hi, I'm going to be in Austin next week and was wondering if there was anywhere that has dancing and new wave (80s) music. Or just new wave music. It would have to be Tues, Wed, or Thurs night.
Also, if anyone has "Dark Knight" tickets to the Alamo Drafthouse (downtown or S. Lamar) for Thurs @ midnight that they won't be using, I'll buy them off you. For 1 MILLION dollars

Speaking of Dark Knight, it starts playing at IMAX on July 18th!! I saw the last Superman movie there and it was awesome. Also, if you want to see Martin Scorcese's Rolling Stones movie (Shine a Light), the last two showings are this Friday and Saturday night. We saw the U-2 movie at IMAX recently and it was absolutely fantastic.

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Don't tell me that. I had already looked at that IMAX theater, got excited, and then realized the movie doesn't start until July 18 in the evening. We leave at around 6PM on the 18th to fly "home," so there's no way.
The horror. THE HORROR!
We're going to some non-Drafthouse Cinemark (with the weird porno-looking female cat) theater in the 78745 area code Thursday night (midnight) and, um, I also got tickets to the Alamo Drafthouse for the next day (during the day) just in case. We are Batman geeks. And I'm very excited to drink beer and watch a movie at the same time. Even if it will be 1pm on a Friday, heh. That's just the way one rolls when one attends a movie at the Drafthouse. (I don't know this to be true. It's just a rule I'm making up )

Elysium on Red River is having their 80's night on Sunday the 13th. Their New Wave/Postpunk/Britpop/Indie night is Friday the 11th. Tuesday the 15th is their 90's night and Wednesday the 16th is their "Underground retro and old school goth" night. I don't know of any other dance clubs off the top of my head (or after glancing at the Chronicle) that do as many theme nights.

It's funny you should mention that place. When I was there last August, I went to Elysium for some sort of 80s night. There were about 2 people there at around 10PM. It was weird and awkward so we left and went "bar hopping" all along Red River St to check out the area. All of the bars had 2 or 3 people in them and we quickly left. I don't know if it's always like that on Thursday nights or it was just a dud night.

I don't actually go to Elysium, but I walk by there a lot and there seems to be quite a few people in there. From what I've seen, Thursday nights are when a lot of College kids choose to go out and bar hop, but since school is not in session in August, the bars are a bit slower. However, 10:00PM in my opinion is way too early to judge a place in downtown Austin. A few places don't even open up until around that time. I would say that 11:30PM would be a better time to show up to a place like that. I've had to wait until 1:00AM or so just for the headlining bands to START playing at Emo's and at the Mohawk.

I walked by Elysium last Saturday night. It was packed with transvestite goth people.

Every time I see the Dark Knight previews, I keep thinking of Heath Ledger's sad, early death. He really looks like a fantastic Joker.
Can't wait for the flick though. The IMAX sounds amazing for that, but I don't think my wife can take the swirli-ness of those theaters. What a bummer to have to leave in the middle...

Another good theater that is showing it in DLP digital is the Galaxy Highland by the old Highland mall. Some people might not think it's the best neighborhood, but it's the best quality screen that I've found in Austin. DLP can make a difference for a Batman film like this.
