Default Cal Kings in Austin / Texas

So, I am back in Austin on an exhausting 3 day trip for looking for a rental. I spent some down time today going to a few furniture places. My wife is 5'10 and hates having her feet tough the end of our queen size bed. So, she wants a Cal King.

Well, the few places I stopped at said they do not carry Cal Kings and no one in Austin / Texas does. However they may be able to special order them. They also told me that I would have a hard time finding linens as well.

So, does anyone know how true it is? I wonder why they are not popular here? Is it just because it has 'cal' in it

Maybe it's because us Texans truly believe that "Cal King" is an oxymoron so we see no sense in carrying that type of bed.

After seeing them both side by side, I went with a standard king over a California King. Yes, you gain about 4 inches in length, but you lose 4 inches in width when going to a California King. A standard king is 80 inches in length just like a queen so since you have 6'8" to work with, it normally shouldn't be a problem for most people under 6'3" or so. I have even seen some California Kings that are only 83.5" long so some are only 3.5" longer than a standard king or a queen (The Sealy Posturpedic Clear Blue Plush mattress is an example that you can see at sears.com). I can't imagine there being that much of a demand for Cal Kings due to this slight extra length. That's my theory anyway.

I think we are going to go to a mattress store when I get back home and compare them side by side as well. I could care less about the length since it doesn't bother me.
