My mom was telling me she recently read a book where the author said that every city has a word that describes it. According to him, NYC was "achieve" and Los Angeles was "success." Mom decided Boston's was "status" (which I don't know if I agree with or not. maybe).

She asked me what Austin's word was, and the word that immediately popped into my head was "eclectic." ("So, like Cambridge 20 or 30 years ago?" she asked me. I thought that was pretty fair.)

What do you think? What's Austin's word?

I'm not talking about what Austin has named itself. Personally, I didn't find Austin "weird" in the slightest. I mean, what's weird about it, exactly? Plus "weird" is too subjective (in my opinion).

I think living in a McMansion in the burbs and having a 9-5 office job is weird. I think having 3 kids is weird. My sister-in-law (who is awesome) would disagree.

I still like the slogan ("Keep Austin Weird"), though, and appreciate it in the spirit that it was meant.

My question was more about the "feel" of Austin. I don't really think one can describe a place using one word, but I also thought it was a fun exercise.

Listen.
As a phrase: "Listen to the Music."
As a sentence: "Listen to the Music, it is good."

Realistically: "Listen to the music and its good. Next week is ACL so stay away from Zilker Park."

To my last girlfriend: "Listen to me - I know what I am talking about."
To the former boyfriend of the last girlfriend: " If you we're listening babe, why are you yelling when you should be packing?"

Dr. Phil has nothing on me.

Words are singular. Sentences conjugate a thought. Sorry Socal Person but life is not a Broadway show or a word, especially in South Austin. It is the sentence. I'll now return to the History Channel and a quality bottle of bourbon. You will all work this out by the time I awaken.

Austin: Cool. My one word for this town.

Hee hee. The first (but not the last) movie I ever walked out on.

On another note: "Office Space" One of the greatest movies ever. AND it had a plot!
