An alternative for bleach is to use vinegar. It's an organic material, disinfects, gets rid of bad smells, even breaks down limescale. I'm not sure about jacuzzi tubs, but I always clean my sinks and faucets with it because it gets off the lime deposits so easily.

I am a frequent user of my spa tub. Maybe once every two weeks I take a bath with some bubbles. I am recovering from a very severe, itchy rash (pseudomonas folliculitis) all over because I failed to sanitize mine. After I figured out the problem, I used bleach and all kinds of black flakes came out in the water. My recommendation is be sure to pour bleach in after each bath and run jets for 5 minutes. Then drain and rinse. Then before entering the next time, run the jets and make sure nothing is being expelled. Also use minimal soap as buildup can occur. Good luck.

American Standard has instruction on their website:
American Standard - Frequently Asked Questions

I did that once a month. But after doing it once, there could still be some black stuff coming out. If you want to be sure then do it 2 or 3 times.
