Rainsoft
Sales tactics are not the reason we enjoy our Rainsoft system. Can't say I was crazy about their spiel; but, we are happy with our water for the past two years.

I've seen/heard similar tactics used by sales folks in a variety of situations...I usually just ask for the facts and bottom line.

Default Rental Options?

I made the mistake of letting one of their sale's guys into my house ('free' consultation after a trip to Home Depot). It was one of the most iterating experiences I've ever had. He repeatedly refused to give prices until he'd repeated his whole stack of alarmist claims several times. The really dumb thing is, I'd probably have bought the system if he hadn't been such a dick. So now I'm looking for other options. I'm leaning towards a self install from GE or Whirlpool, but also thinking about renting. Anyone have any rental tips?

I have never heard of renting a water softener. Why would you do that? If you own your home - don't you plan to keep the softener indefinitely?

We have a rainsoft system that was installed in 2008. Every clear glass item that has been washed, is etched and grimy. All three camodes, drain black streaks, and have stains that can not be removed. The service man comes out, tests our water, shake, shake, changes our filters for the Kitchen sink, says its good to go for another year. When asked about the etching and camodes, that is not a rainsoft problem it is bad plumbing! This system was put in the same week we bought this "NEW HOUSE!

Dang! That's not good news. Our Rainsoft system(July, '08) has no such problems. We don't have the stain/buildup that was evident early on in the dishwasher(we have used one of the d/w cleaners after almost two years). The glasses are fine and the glass shower surround is MUCH easier to clean...not perfect, but much easier. We're due for a filter change in the RO system in the kitchen; but, otherwise, we're happy.

The original poster asked about Rainsoft in Houston. I wouldn't trust them. Their website had Florence Henderson endorsing their product, which she stopped doing a long, long time ago. Dishonest.

Our contract expired June 2010 with Florance Henderson. Not sure who posted this but wish they would get correct information not slandering RainSoft or the independent dealership in Houston. We have over 34,000 wonderful customers here in the Houston area. We have won the top service award from our manufacturer RainSoft since 1989. We have also received many customer service awards from our local BBB including the 2009 Pinnacle award which is the highest award for customer service. Each RainSoft dealership is independently owned and operated. RainSoft is just the brand of equipment.

I went to Home Depot to look for a lamp. I was approached in the store by a guy wanting to set up an appointment for an in-home demonstration for RainSoft. That was EXTREMELY annoying to me, but effective for them since I did end up setting the appointment. The high-pressure sales tactic was also annoying. I had the same thing happen with a Kirby vacuum demonstration. They give you the price, then when you say "not gonna happen," or "I want to think about it," they get on the phone to call their boss to see what further discounts they can offer you. This goes back and forth a few times. It's awkward and uncomfortable. What set this salesman apart, though, is that he actually told us that if we didn't buy right then, he'd likely never hear from us again. Okay. And??? Is that somehow supposed to make us change our minds? He told us only 1 in 500 people who say they'll think about it and buy later actually end up buying. The other 499 are just tire-kickers, I guess. So what? You're damn right I'm going to kick tires. I have the right to. I didn't call you people; you solicited me -- in Home Depot -- when I was there to buy a lamp!! Water softeners weren't even on my mind. I absolutely want to know what else is out there and how prices and quality compare. I'm not going to commit to an $8,000 purchase on the spot when I have no idea how your company compares to others. Could that be why the other 499 people never come back to buy? Perhaps you NEED to close the sale on the spot before the consumer figures out that there are other less expensive options out there. Ridiculous!!! I hate high-pressure salesmen.

the jury is out for me. NJ law allows 3 days to rescind, so I went ahead with the "hard sell", knowing i can cancel after doing research. Seems like some people love it, some people think it's too expensive....and then some people hate the sales tactics? i'm not sure...
