Default Fishing In Austin

Where are some of the best places to go? Lake Travis? On shore or boat?

And what type of fish are generally caughtand sizes (i.e. catfish, bass, etc.).

And last, are permits required.

I look forward to everyone's response.

A permit is required and you can get those at HEB, Walmart almost anywhere it seems these days. Boat fishing would be the best but if you don't know the water a guide might make your day more enjoyable. I think around here its big and small mouth bass, bluegill, perch and couple different types of catfish. The highland lakes are great places to go but the area has a lot of small ponds and some of the parks stock fish so catch and release. Mr. neddy is sort of fisherman so if you need anything else let me know be happy to help.

Lake Buchanan is a popular fishing spot. So is Granger Lake and Bastrop. You can fish at Travis, but all I see there are pleasure boats, so I have no idea where the quiet spots are. Probably down some of the less busy coves and creeks I imagine.

On a related topic, can anyone recommend a specific place for Carp fishing, preferably catch & release as they are not really an eating fish and get huge if left to live a natural life. Personal record is 36lbs

You can fish for carp on Town Lake right in the middle of town. Can't use a gasoline powered motor but you can use your trolling motor or a kayak or canoe. The carp escaped into Town Lake from Lake Austin where they were imported to help eat the hydrilla.

Default Fishing near Steiner Ranch

Does anyone know any good places to fish very close to Steiner Ranch? It doesn't have to be the best out of the way fishing place, just a place to drop my line in and teach my kid to fish. We went to Wal-Mart and picked up our poles, bait, and licenses...we just need a convenient place to go. Please help, specifics and experiences would be good to know.
