French door models staying open IS a problem. We have one in my office, and the doors can easily remain slightly open and unnoticed. As for space, I like the fridge portion because it accepts caterer's trays easily. However, I still prefer a side-by-side design. Now, if I could just find a deep side-by-side . . .

Don't buy Whirlpool - I bought one of the double doors, ice in the freezer door, etc. It is 18 months old and the ice dispenser motor has gone out and the ice maker itself went out. PLUS the inside of the refrigerator NEVER gets any cooler than 32. So think about your milk being "warm".......

The recommended refridgerator temperature is 38 F, I think....why would you want to freeze your milk?

Ice dispensors/makers are an issue (to some degree) with all makers. Consumer Reports keeps separate repair records for 'fridges with and fridges w/o, and for every maker the difference is huge (IIRC, 2x, 3x, or more).

Our french door 'fridge sort of automatically closes.....the right-hand door closes automatically, but the left hand door (the one with the middle seal built in) occasionally does not. The unit beeps when this happens, but it has only happened two or three times over the past year.

Anybody have any experiences with the new Kenmore Elites? My folks have had Kenmore's for years and swear by them, I was just curious if they were still making quality appliances?

Also - what brands/models use LED lights INSIDE the fridge/freezer? I saw this on one High-end LG at Home Depot the other day but not on any others. I really liked the LED light as opposed to the old incandescent bulbs.

I've lived with all styles of refrigerators and my favorite, by far, is the bottom freezer, non-french door style. Hate the side-by-side. I put a lot of wide things in the fridge, and the side-by-side is just not conducive to that. i don't care for the french doors because two doors are just an unnecessary extra step. What's wrong with one big door? I like to have one fridge door so I can open it and see all my options at once. If you are hdoling something wide, like a party tray or a watermelon, the french doors are a pain.

We just got a new fridge and I had to search high and low for a traditional freezer on the bottom, one door on the top. i finally special ordered one sight-unseen from Home Depot. It's a Whirlpool. It's huge and I love it. It has lots of great features. I've never had a fridge with the short but super wide drawer and I loooove it.
I bought an Amana freezer on the bottom about 15 years ago. It has worked beautifully the whole time. It is now the fridge we have in the garage. Still going strong!

I have a KitchenAide (side-by-side) and it's great. It's only 3 years old, though. I'd always wanted an ice-maker, and we got one, but after about a couple of months, I turned it off and we don't use it anymore. I didn't feel like changing the filter and the ice tasted funky (because of our water, I assume). Now it just takes up space in our freezer.
