Austin Texas has been and always will be one of the best places to live in America. The housing is reasonable, taxes low, crime low. If I were you, the only concern that you need to have is that Texas is famous for blonde haired, blue eyed, very beautiful women. If you are not in fabulous condition and your husband is..beware!! He will stray...Austin is also a college town..young beautiful women....more competition...

Austin has nice hills in the west side (pricey area to live however). As for snakes/scorps you will actually find less around older homes or established neighborhoods.
The heat sucks and there is no way around that - but thats only 3-4 months of 95-105 heat. The rest of the year is really nice.
From what I've seen/heard most people like Austin but your location for your preferred lifestyle will be a big factor toyour experience here.

There are lots of creepy crawly things thats for sure. With the drought comes lots of problems, I was there a couple of weeks ago and couldn't believe how low Lake Travis was. Allergies are a problem: cedar and mold....yuk.

I know people keep saying housing is cheap in and around Austin but I certainly don't think so. I think the price of homes is outrageous. Perhaps people are making reference to apartments or condos or something other than homes...
You can get a real good deal on a dump...$100,000, out the door.
And the thing about beautiful women...oh brother. If a man is going to stray, he's going to stray...doesn't matter where he is...Austin or the North Pole.
I'll even apologize here because I do have a negative slant to the whole "moving to Texas thing". I've never been there, I don't really want to go there, and I can't seem to talk myself into it. So, I'm sorry to all you Texas lovers...blond or otherwise.
Oh, and the taxes? Why do people keep saying the taxes are low? They aren't low...they're freekin sky high.
AND, I haven't even mentioned the HOA'S ...don't get me started. What is with the HOA'S in that town?

I think it has everything to do with someone's point of reference. If you are coming from Boston, Seattle, LA, NYC, the Bay Area, San Diego, or DC area Austin is CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP. If you are coming from Detroit, Akron, Oklahoma City, or just about any other city in Texas, Austin will seem pricey. So people saying that Austin housing is cheap are likely coming from higher priced markets.
If you are being forced to move to Austin because of a job transfer, don't knock it until you have been there. It is really a great place. I cannot understand the anti-Texas bias people have. There are parts of the state that are just beautiful but it really seems to have gotten a bad rap.

Yes, I agree. It's all relative to ones experience and point of reference. However, in all good conscience, I cannot change my view if it's my view.
If I've stepped on your toes I profusely apologize. It certainly isn't direction at you.

So you've never been here and yet you feel you know what it's like well enough to feel negatively about it? How?

I hate when a very small percentage of people do something the rest of us are guilty by association.

Devils backbone outside Wimberley is very pretty as an answer on number 5.
You should check it out when you move to Texas, and it's defenetly worth taking pictures of!
And in Texas there's a lot of pretty and tall cactus.
So Texas has very nice nature.

I thought that they only have scorpians in some parts of Texas, right?
They don't have them in the Austin Aeria, right?
