Default Drivers License-no test?

Just went to the DMV today and heard from one of the staff that I don't have to take the test since I had completed Drivers Ed.com (Theory) and Austin Driving School (In car instruction). Unfortunately I didn't have all the right forms, so I couldn't get my license right away-if what she said was true. So...does this mean no written and driving test at all?

Default Depends...

I think it depends on how old you are.

Interesting....

Wouldn't the Austin Driving School be able to tell you the facts?

thats sounds a little odd. Unless you have a valid driving license from another state I would think DMW expects you to take the test. I remember when we moved to Austin 3 years back I didn't have to take the test bcoz i had a valid out-of-state license. However my wife had to since she never held another license. She did the course at Austin driving school, still had to take the test at DMV.
I don't know if things have changed in the last 3 years.

This frightens me, if it's the slightest bit true.

I've heard, if you pass a 'certified' school, you don't have to take the physical driving test, though I'm fairly certain you still need to take the "written" test.

When we moved to Oregon, both my wife and I had to take the written Oregon test, even though we'd both been licensed in multiple previous states, our then-current Colorado licenses were clear, and weren't on any most-wanted-for-felonious-driving lists.

Go figure.

I found most of the vehicle pilots, they weren't drivers, in Moronegon had their own, random interpretations of vehicle road law, so it was kinda irrelevant.

The DPS written exam is administered in the theory class, so, assuming you passed the class, you do not need to take the written test again. If you are a minor, and you have completed the 7 driving and 7 observation hours in the car at ADS, you do not have to take an official road test with a DPS officer. You can have ADS apply for the license for you. They will take your certificate of completion, as well as all the necessary documents, down for you.

To austin mommy: yeah it definitely does. I'm kind of unsure though why pvaustin's wife had to take the test, as an adult, and me, as a minor, doesn't have to (assuming that is true).

To southdown: yeah, I will ask ADS

To pvaustin: It might be different for me b/c I'm 16, but then you never know. Better to be prepared, right

To Mckellyb: Yes, seems very lenient on the part of the DPS to allow this- if it was true! The handbook definitely says I don't have to take the driving test since I passed in car instruction w/ ADS. But again, I will take your advice and at least prepare for the written test- though isn't it on the computer now here in austin?

To rbrands: have you ever had experience with this? you seem to be pretty definitive on what you said.

So to summarize, right now I will prepare for everything as if I would take it, just in case. Thanks everyone!

Unless it's changed, if you passed a driver's ed class you do not have to take a driving test but do have to take the written test (the TX test is only like 15-20 multiple choice questions). I remember my sister was the first class of 16 year olds that didn't have to take the test back in '92 or '93.

I partially blame this for the quality of Texas drivers.
