I was wondering if you Austinites feel like the job market has slowed down there now. I've been applying for jobs since May and not have much luck -- and there aren't any jobs that I've been salivating over. It seems to me that I don't see the amount of jobs posted that I had before, but I'm not sure if that's because before I wasn't applying but now I'm sending resumes like crazy.

We were hoping to be moved by now but it's taking faaarrrr longer than I imagined. It's really gonna suck if I'm stuck in Atlanta for another winter. SIGH.

I'm in the same boat. I even have an MBA and can't find anything. Been looking since May myself. Hopefully something will come about soon. Best of luck to you in your search.

Patrick,

Did you graduate from McCombs? I ask b/c I graduated from McCombs a few years ago and it took me several months of searching for a job before I decided to relocate to another city with a better job market.

Austin, for all its charms, does NOT have a very strong job market, and I think in these difficult economic times, you'd be better off relocating.

Job growth in June slides to 2004 levels (http://www.statesman.com/search/content/business/stories/employment/07/19/0719jobs2.html - broken link)

Unless you don't mind getting paid $10/hr as a "web designer" who is required to memorize a laundry list of computer languages for some random "up and coming" ecommerce site, or want to work for the state, Austin's job market is rather weaksauce.

Are there so many UT students that are doing web design or just too many of us web design type folks moving into town? I've seen quite a few posts here stating that the person was a designer and looking for work...

There's no way I can support my family on $10/hr. I have seen some of the lower salaries posted on Craigslist and it's disheartening.

Well, it's not that there so many web designers in town, because you can do web design almost anywhere. It's just that these companies, especially in a college intense city like Austin, have gotten stingy and figured out how and when to exploit people. And outside of that there aren't really any unique higher-tier jobs with the exception for working for the state.

Austin just doesn't have a very big and robust economy. Not a lot of big companies. Many of us could get hired in a blink of an eye in Houston or Dallas. Finding a job in Austin takes much longer and you will likely be paid 70% of what they pay in Houston or Dallas.

That's how I see it.

I am in the late stages of interviewing at a place in Austin. I'm expecting to take a 70% hit in salary from my North East job. Willing to do it for family and lifestyle reasons......but with a 70% hit in salary, we will be ramping down our standard of living despite the cost of living adjustment.

I also think the the real estate market in Austin is going to take a hit. RE prices were driven up by Californians, NYers etc. having tons of cash, NOT from salaries in the Austin area. Salaries in Austin are the same if not tighter, and those Californians are no longer able to sell their properties with windfall properties.

I'm happy to take a small hit in salary -- if I could get a job.
